About Dead Reckoning: The Long Drift

A dream among the stars — or a nightmare.1,000 colonists. One ship. A destination that may be fifty years away — or centuries. Some will land. Some will be born, age, and die in the dark between stars without ever knowing if the mission succeeded.

Inspired by John Ayliff's Seedship, Dead Reckoning is a game about the slow, invisible erosion of civilization across generations. Every decision you make is defensible in the moment. The horror is retroactive.Manage food, power, and hull integrity across centuries of deep space. Navigate crises, uprisings, and failures that compound silently into irreversible outcomes. The crew that arrives — if they arrive — may not remember where they came from, what they believed, or what it means to be human. A society of clones. A ship that has become a cathedral. An AI that no longer needs to ask permission.

Five forces reshape your colony across generations: genetic drift, ideological fracture, AI integration, technological regression, and class stratification. Every choice nudges the needle. None of them reset. The faction that rises in year 200 was built from decisions you made in year 40.

Settlement. Extinction. Digital transcendence. A ship that turns back. A crew that ascends without landing. Every run tells a different story. What reaches that planet is the sum of everything you did — and didn't do — across centuries in the dark. You may not recognize it. You may not want to.

I want to believe the disclaimer in that the text was thought up entirely by humans, but after reading it - I struggle to believe it. Okay, your writing style may match OpenAI's finetuning corpus styleguide one-to-one, I get that, but the vagueness and disconnect from the gameplay that some of the text has is too telling. Example: One event's choice would have you "Shift to short crew rotations", so I click it, stats change, but the actual crew rotation setting doesn't actually change. And I can't help but think that this event was written by a bot that was given the description of the game world, but the only effects it could wire-up to event outcomes were stat modifiers. Sure, a dev could have forgotten to make the event affect ship settings, but it's not the only instance like this. I wanted more of Seedship. It was thrilling to encounter an unusual event and wonder what's in store for me , but knowing that Scam Altman or Dario decides my events is far less fun

It is a satisfying game as it stands. Expanded as intended it should be very exciting.

Sad to say that a strong AI writing vibe detracts significantly from the experience - despite the dev claiming no ai influence on the creative side. I don't know if the dev perhaps copied too hard from llm prompts, or trusted an outside writer who lied, or simply didn't have enough confidence in their own voice, but this is clearly heavily ai-influenced writing and the experience suffers heavily for it. The rest of game systems also feel heavily vibe-coded, but I don't actually think that takes away so much. In fact, this game is a fascinating case study in vibe coding. The simulation is fairly complex and interesting, the overall idea is cool, and there are a lot of different ways a run can go - right now I'd say it's worth a purchase if the idea interests you. $15 is a fair price for everything but the writing. My advice? Hire a writer, especially if you want to hold the price where it is.

Incredibly interesting seedship-inspired colony/generation ship simulator that explores the expected themes. If you wanted more from seedship you can try this out. Vastly improved from demo. Looking forward to what development brings in the future. A lot more stuff than seedship since this also goes into what happens after you land.

I hereby strongly challenge the claim (which, in my view, is an obvious lie) that everything written was created without the use of AI. I am very familiar with AI markers and have so far been able to identify them in a great many of the in-game texts that have been shown.

I REALLYl like the concept behind this game as well as layout of the A/V. I thought it was cool how when my power dropped the screen didn't quite work right. The "colonist" however are too passive, one "colony" calmly starved to death. There would have been rioting, destruction, and cannibalism long before the wasting death of the crew.
