Demon Core is a short horror game that I found genuinely tense because it makes navigation part of the fear. I enter an abandoned nuclear power plant wearing a radiation suit, carrying a map and a radiation detector while something dangerous moves through the facility. I really liked that I am not given convenient waypoints telling me exactly where to go. The map and radiation detector are the heart of the gameplay. I have to figure out the layout myself while watching the radiation levels around me and deciding which routes are safe enough to take. I enjoyed this because it makes exploration feel like an actual survival problem. Getting lost is not just inconvenient because I also have to worry about what might be waiting nearby. The creature also works well because I cannot simply fight my way through the facility. The focus is on surviving and finding a route through the plant rather than turning the game into a traditional action horror experience. I liked that choice because it keeps the tension high whenever I hear something nearby. The atmosphere is easily the strongest part of Demon Core.
