Detective Butler: Maiden Voyage Murder is a short mystery visual novel that puts me on a cruise ship with a murder to solve and a strange history hanging over the whole trip. The story takes place on a ship that had been connected to two deaths back in 1962 before eventually being used as a tourist attraction. Decades later it sets sail again, and Gilligan ends up working with Detective Butler when another incident happens. I like the setup because the haunted cruise ship gives the mystery a nice atmosphere without needing a huge world or complicated gameplay. Most of the game is about following the story, meeting the people on the ship and keeping track of the information I uncover. My journal records important details about suspects and evidence, which helps when I am trying to work out what actually happened. The investigation is not based around difficult traditional puzzles. Instead, I have to pay attention to conversations and interrogations and connect the information I am given. I think that works well for the type of mystery the game is trying to tell because I am encouraged to actually follow the case rather than just hunt for random objects. The presentation is one of …

While it's sad, in a way, and the free version is linear (I bought the DLC), it's still a good little story. The killer isn't immediately obvious, which I like, even though they were on the top of my list. I wish they'd make more of these, but since this was published back in 2017, I'm not holding my breath. My BL loving heart enjoys it a lot, even though there's no actual romance.
