About Devil on Your Shoulder

See your name in lights on Broadway! Find fame, fortune, and true love! All it costs is your immortal soul. Devil on Your Shoulder is an interactive urban fantasy romance novel by Lisa Fox, where your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based, 300,000 words and hundreds of choices, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination. It's the '90s! You've just moved to New York to chase your dreams of Broadway stardom. Every day you walk past the theaters where legendary shows debuted. Rent! Les Miserables! Phantom of the Opera! Smash hits bring audiences to their feet and launch the careers of people just like you. You’ve landed an audition for a new production of Alice in Wonderland, which could be your big break, but hitting it big is harder than you ever imagined. Meanwhile, you're trying to make another one of your dreams come true: to find love. Will it be with your neighbor Cris? He’s an award-winning photojournalist, daring enough to go into war zones, with luxurious long dark hair, strong tattooed arms, and very sexy dance moves. Or will you fall for Ryan, a rising politician from a fabulously wealthy family, with sparkling sapphire eyes and movie-star good looks? He’s always looking to the future, full of ideas about how to make New York a better place: will you be part of the next political dynasty with him? But then, you and your roommate accidentally summon a powerful demon. A very handsome powerful demon named Davin, who instantly turns all of his infernal might towards helping you! With a wave of his hand, he can grant your every wish. Land that starring role? Take down your rival? Save your local bookstore from gentrification? Win the lottery? It's done!…as long as you give him a bit of your soul. The demon is always whispering in your ear. There’s a reason the phrase ‘handsome as sin’ exists—and it might be because of his flowing golden hair and supernaturally sharp suits. He’s enormously powerful, yes—but he’s got some metaphorical demons of his own haunting his past, and with your help, he just might be able to break free. Become everything you've dreamed of in the glorious, glamorous, gritty concrete jungle of 1990s New York. Dance at a star-studded gala; sing your heart out at auditions; stroll through Central Park; dive deep into the graffiti-filled subways. Will you give in to temptation so that you can achieve stardom, or try to make it on your own and risk losing it all? • Play as a woman romancing men. • Find love with a daring photojournalist, a visionary politician, or a tempting demon. • Preserve your soul, or spend it freely to gain effortless rewards! • Try to land a starring role on Broadway: choose your performance style and charm the producers! • Mingle with the poets, dreamers, and eccentrics of the East Village! Help them resist gentrification or make way for the next millennium. • Join a political campaign to bring in a new era in New York City politics! • Befriend your professional rival, or do whatever it takes to cut her down. • Dig deeper into arcane mysteries to understand your demon’s mystic powers—or to break free of the bonds that tie you together. How far will you go to see your name in lights?

This is not a recommend/don't recommend as much as a 'i don't know how i feel about it'. It's not a bad game, it's not poorly written, it has enjoyable moments, but i found myself rather frustrated and conflicted with a lot of things as i was playing it. So let us go over some of them. Matchmaking ROs with other npcs. This has always been a heated topic of debate, some like it some don't. I do not enjoy it, and while i normally wouldn't bring this up as it's ultimately a matter of preferences, one specific match made me side eye this game. Ryan, if not romanced, can get with Heather, MC's rival. Now it wouldn't be all that weird, if the game didn't point out that Heather is basically MC's copy, in body type, in skintone, in hair, in eyes, 'could pass as mc's doppelganger' as the game puts it. Even more comical is one of MC's dialogue options being 'they look good together'... which i genuinely am not sure how to interpret? like girl wdum they look good together she has YOUR face. It's honestly a questionable match all around that i'd laugh at if it wasn't so sad. And now for the romance itself. The way the game is structured makes it so one RO starts with a massive advantage ov…

Honestly I expected something better, this one is pretty shallow and unserious. It's a pity there is no neutral option because it's not awful but not that good either, good enough to pass the time but that's it.

This was my first foray into the Heart's Choice games, and I quite enjoyed it. On my first play through I opted for Davin's romance (weak spot of mine, lol), and fluctuated too much between giving into the demon's power and being a good person, so I didn't get the ending I wanted. I think there's a fair amount of replay opportunity. Wasn't a huge fan of the other love interests pairing up with other side characters and having to support or decline their relationships, but those moments didn't get too much screen-time, anyway. The imagery was also quite nice and brought life to the city the story takes place in. Overall, this was a fun novel to spend the weekend on.

This was incredibly touching. I often find myself frustrated by the latter half/endings/romances of CoG games, but this one was immersive and entertaining the whole way. Thank you for a delightful experience! (I took the Davrin route)

What a fantastic story! The characters are easy to fall in love with. And a dateable demon to top it off with!? Consider me addicted and my soul sold. A solid 10/10.

The story kept my attention throughout, nice and interesting plot wise, and the characters all felt pretty strong. Especially the demon and the roommate Miriam, they're a majority of the time but they had a pleasant and strong presence in the story. The writing was solid, nice balance between prose and dialogue, and the choices were nicely mixed between serious and chill, and some of the responses were exactly what I wanted to say. The protagonist felt strong as well, with a good bit of agency (the endings you work towards felt different enough that you get multiple interesting stories), you also have a nice variety of morality for your protag, and generally you can be as cute, serious or punk as you want. It's nice and refreshing how much you can flesh out who your lead is in this, you can really feel the personality of the character through the choices you make. The romances are pretty good, I liked the demon a lot - honestly that kind of felt like the 'canon' romance, but that's just me (highly recommend). Overall: if you like the 90s aesthetic, demons and the supernatural, and romance, this is a fun and cosy game. It hit the spot for me with how it's described on the stor…
