About Driftland: The Magic Revival
Build your magical empire across procedurally generated floating lands, commanding armies of beast-riding warriors without micromanagement while terraforming the world and expanding your realm through strategic goal-setting. Harness ancient magic to tame dragons, connect drifting islands, and battle rival Mage Overlords in a shattered world teetering on the edge of restoration or annihilation.

After a devastating war between ancient mages, a powerful spell is all that holds together the shattered planet of Driftland. Faced with the destruction of their entire civilization and life on the planet, the warring factions called a truce and tried to repair the damage – but it was already too late. By using all their remaining magic to cast a powerful spell, they managed to keep their world in relative balance.
Many dark ages passed, but when all seemed lost, a ray of hope emerged once more: new sources of magic appeared, and new mages were given birth to across the planet. Now, as the dormant conflicts once again surface, this rediscovered power will determine whether Driftland is restored to its former glory or wiped from the cosmos entirely.
You take on the role of a Mage Overlord with your own castle, tower, and a small realm on one of the landmasses. With your unique powers, you can explore a procedurally generated world and connect floating lands to expand your kingdom.

Gameplay focuses on setting general goals for all your units without the need to micromanage each of them. The warriors, archers, and mages under your command are able to tame and ride different kinds of flying beasts and create various aerial units.

First impressions are that it really hits a great compromise between indirect control, real-time strategy, and 4x components. It removes most of the tedious micromanagement you'd see in a 4x, both in terms of economy and combat... and lets you focus on the high-level mage fantasy. Really quite unique. I have high hopes for it, but we'll see as I play more.2 found this helpful
A Settlers-like strategy game, but without its charm.2 found this helpful

Driftlands is a unique RTS fantasy game where you expand by moving floating islands together and attaching them via bridges, or by plonking down portals. You harvest the resources on these islands to build an army that is semi-autonomous; you can't direct individual units, but can give orders that your army will respond to. It's alright. An interesting concept with a solid (and free to download) soundtrack. I enjoyed the slow build of an economy and army before striking with overwhelming force. Unfortunately, the experience does get stale...the AI is not particularly smart and there isn't a strong push to use new strategies (aside from occasional handicaps introduced by some campaign missions). Things start to feel like they play out the same every time, but it's fun while it lasts. The campaign provides a loose story that doesn't really give us enough time or material to really connect with characters - nothing to write home about. Each faction is visually distinct and each have a small number of unique spells, but theres not enough to set them apart - my strategy for each was the same. I did not try multiplayer, but I imagine the game is more interesting and challengin…
