Echoes of Seasons

This was a pleasant journey. The puzzles and mechanics are interesting without being too tricky, and graphics are cool too.

What kinda spawn of satan or servant of C'thulhu would use "ZSDQ" instead of "WASD" on a keyboard is unknown to me but these developers clearly do so I STRONGLY recommend to grab a controller. Besides, it is a super chill couch controller puzzle platformer for sure. It gets repetitive and quite boring mid game and movements are really clunky but everything worked fine there were no bugs from start to finish. So for a free game, I definitely recommend.

Echoes of Seasons is a small 3D puzzle adventure that I found quite charming. I play as Nikolos, a reckless young man who has received the blessing of Demeter and gained the ability to change the seasons. The goal is to restore fertility to the land around his town, but getting there means exploring the environment and figuring out a series of puzzles. I liked the basic idea because changing the seasons is not just part of the story. It is actually connected to how I progress through the world. The season changing ability is easily the most interesting part for me. Instead of simply walking around looking for switches, I have to pay attention to the environment and think about how different seasonal conditions can affect what I am able to do. This gives the exploration a nice puzzle solving angle. I enjoyed looking around for clues and working out what the game wanted me to notice rather than being given every solution immediately. There are also quite a few different mechanisms to deal with. Pressure plates, moving objects and pendulum based challenges give the game some variety, and I liked the fact that the puzzles are tied into the environments rather than feeling like comple…

Echoes of Seasons is a 3D puzzle game. It is free and was a final year project but, in my view, is as cleverly designed and implemented as many commercial games, to the development team's great credit. There are a few rough edges (e.g. the playing character Nikolos got stuck in scenery three times, and has a strange floating animation when moving), but all of the levels and their mechanics worked as they should, and there are very good save & chapter/level select systems. The story is of a search for the goddess Demeter who has disappeared, causing agricultural land to become infertile and wild. Nikolos has to progress through a series of levels, gathering (or sometimes growing) a floral tribute in each which will open a path to the next level when placed on an altar. Nikolos has a special power - he can use statues of Demeter to change the season to overcome obstacles (e.g. Winter freezes rivers which can then be crossed and produces frozen blocks which can be moved, Summer burns off spiked plants which block paths and activates geysers to lift rocks, and Spring allows ivy-like plants to grow which can be used to climb rockfaces and zip-wire over gaps/obstacles). Its a fun concept... navigate the seasons to solve puzzles. Its fun, its challenging, its free. The game could use some touch-ups though. The controls aren't always as tight as you would like and the framerate causes some stuttering, but for a free game this one is playable, and oftentimes pretty fun, overall.
