Echoes of the Fey Episode 0: The Immolation is a short story driven adventure that works mainly as an introduction to a much bigger fantasy world. I play as Sofya Rykov, an Imperial Army officer who is guarding Leshin prisoners in the city of Onigrad. Things start going wrong when one of the prisoners begins acting strangely, and then the Fey reactor explodes. From there I have to work out what is happening while also trying to escape before the city is destroyed. I like the setup because it gives me a clear reason to keep moving without taking ages to get started. The story is easily the strongest part for me. Sofya is not yet the private investigator she becomes later, so this gives me a look at her before the main events of the series. I get to talk to the prisoners, learn about the conflict between humans and Leshin and slowly understand why the Fey reactors have caused so much tension. I like that the game does not explain everything immediately. There is a bigger world behind what I am seeing, and finding out small details through conversations makes the setting feel more interesting than a simple fantasy prison escape. "Echoes of the Fey Episode 0: The Immolation" is not a game, it's more of an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game... except it's not a full e-book either! This just like the first chapter in some godawful fan-fiction and the "author" expects you'll go pay money or something to get the rest of it. This is never okay. As an advertisement for a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. Now I did say there's no notable gameplay, there's a few very mild mobile app tier finger swiping style puzzles to work through, but the vast bulk of this advertisement is dedicated to a godawfully bad fantasy/detective fan-fiction book called "Echoes of the Fey: Episode 1", something about foxes... look, it's a really badly written fan-fiction.
