Interesting concept with poor execution. What starts out as an exploration of the history of the medium is quickly bogged down with humor that falls flat more often than not. For example, everyone is familiar with annoying fetch quests that force you to backtrack multiple times. Making the player participate in one doesn't make it funny, it just wastes our time. I wanted to enjoy this, but it is a slog.

This is arguably one of the worst game I've played in the past years. As others have said, the concept is interesting but the execution is aweful. This is supposed to be a tribute to old console games (typically like Zelda) that weren't "perfect" so there are features that seem unfair/unbalanced/annoying in some aspects compared to recent games (not much savepoint, running around a lot, poor loot, uneven drops etc) BUT they actually managed to make it worse, killing all the fun you should have. I had a hard time enjoying it for the most part (especially because of how OFTEN you get in random fight. Just like you do in Pokemon.... but in such a worse way. I was glad when getting the aircraft and started to have fun again trying to collect everything (despite labyrinthic maps that are so badly made) but ended up loosing it all for the Dodgeball and Hero achievment. Basically, everything is sort of random. Your hero can level up but it doesn't matter a bit. At level 15 you can still get attacked by a groupe of four who attack before you and remove 25% of your health, your attack can miss 5 times straight, sometimes you do 15 damages, sometimes 30, so basically your defense and attack …

Genuinely fun game with an interesting concept spanning several years of gaming. A wonderful love letter to all those great games that inspired many, MANY other countless great games.

an ode to classic rpgs

I was really looking forward to playing Evoland since its launch, but I ended up having to request a refund. The advertised controller support is completely broken. I tested the game with two different official Xbox controllers that work perfectly fine with all my other Steam games, and it either fails to detect them entirely or the input is completely messed up. I even plugged in a Logitech G923 wheel just to see if the game would recognize any input device at all, but nothing worked. I spent a lot of time following guides and troubleshooting steps from online forums, but I couldn't get it fixed. It is a real shame because I wanted to experience it myself, but at this point, I am just going to get my money back and stick to watching playthroughs online. I cannot recommend this if you plan to play with a gamepad.
