FISH³: FIRST CATCH

FISH³: FIRST CATCH is one of those games that immediately caught me off guard because the whole idea is so ridiculous. This is a surreal fishing adventure where I am not simply sitting around waiting for fish to bite. Instead, I use a fish as the engine for my boat and try to control where I am going while it pulls me through the water. It is strange, colourful and intentionally silly, but I think that is exactly what makes it work. The main fishing mechanic is easily my favourite part. I cast my rod at a powerful fish and once I catch it, that fish starts pulling my boat around. I then have to pull the rod in the direction I want to travel while trying to keep control of the boat. Sometimes the fish feels like it is helping me and other times it feels like I am desperately trying to stop it from dragging me somewhere I do not want to go. I enjoyed how much movement this adds to what would normally be a very slow type of game. I also liked being able to use two fishing rods at once. While one rod is being used to control the fish powered boat, I can use the other to catch additional fish that are nearby. Extremely buggy demo! I really want to enjoy this game but the bugs are just too much to ignore. I can clearly see the quite frankly brilliant concept put out by the devs, but it's currently held back by basic quality assurance. I experienced the following: -Fish steering not working (I know control is supposed to be limited but not steering get the same strict path) -Fish taking the same path (regardless of steering). On level 1 it consistently goes behind ramps for some reason -Fish swimming outside the "track" for around half the playtime -Fish swimming through terrain (it swam into a tall rock in level 2 once, getting the boat stuck) -Fish losing velocity and just looking up (steering did nothing to fix it, got sunk by a cannonball shortly after) -Fish being behind the boat on several occasions -Controller binds having no icons, just text like "left bumper" -There is always one bar indicators for extra fish that is fake and never registers an input on it -Game taking up my entire GPU memory Not sure how I'm gonna 100% this demo considering I can't even finish a level in it's current state. The left control stick doesn't seem to work on Linux when trying to maneuver the boat. It works fine before then, but I can't get through the tutorial without it working. Fun for what I can do, even though it's extremely limited.

Mankind fears what it fails to understand. But fish? Fish love you regardless of who or what you are. Never forget that.
