FlippUp

This a very tough game to review. I heavily debated giving this a thumbs down but after considering the amount of effort and charm that went into this game, I decided to give a very soft recommendation. Flippup is a rage game, so it is designed for you to easily lose progress and make you rage. However this game suffers from mechanics that push beyond that i feel. A lot of rage games I've played and enjoyed typically have difficult and sometimes outright unfair mechanics, but they are reliable. You're able to overcome them because eventually you learn the traps and tricks and with a little luck you can come out on top. Flippup manages to throw this out the window. Flippup is simple in the fact that you're in a giant vertical pinball machine and must climb to the top, and you only have to rely on 3 buttons, and very rarely a fourth. Unfortunately, the results of these simple mechanics are completely destroyed by unpredictable and unreliable feedback. The way the physics of the balls and the flippers are designed drive me nuts. You can eventually somewhat get a hang of them and get a flow going, but eventually it is going to absolutely ♥♥♥♥ you over, and you will be mad. T…

Very cool Idea, not well executed. My thoughts on the matter are that this is not a pinball game, it just so happens to look like one. Two main issues for me; the ball's gravity is too much, and the flippers dont have a lock preventing it from going backwards. My best guess as to the first issue is that the dev made the pinball machine vertical, which means gravity's full force is being applied downwards (relative to the screen) at all times. Pinball machines aren't vertical, you could say they are closer to being horizontal than vertical. This leads into the second issue where the ball seems to negate a lot of the force that should be applied by the flipper. Most of the time the flipper should be able to effortlessly push the ball. Both of these issues apply to every single action in the game, making this a grueling experience. I cant recommend this to anyone who has experience on real pinball machines. I love the pro tips "take your time", "be patient". Yes, pinball is well known to be a slow paced game. Haha.

This game looks great... but plays terribly. It looks like an interesting pinball inspired game, but plays more like trying to bounce lead shot off a piece of lumber loosely wrapped with hessian sack. If that appeals to you then give it a go. Otherwise, I cannot recommend it.

This game... Is not fair. It can feel unreasonable at times. Note, when I say its unfair, I mean it in the sense that it will punish you for even the slightest of mistakes, at times. It will also give you brief moments of respite. Don't count on it, though. I have had to step away multiple times. But the feeling I get when I cleared an area is unlike anything else. I managed to make it to the top just today, and I have to say, this game is worth the pain. It was fun throughout, and nothing overstayed its welcome. Approach it as a game of skill, not a pinball emulation. Also, the music slaps. Devs, please release the soundtrack as a dlc, I would buy it in an instant.

Good rage game! You'll make wayy more mistakes than something like getting over it, and it's much more forgiving as a result, which is good!! The limited horizontal space means that you can only fall so far before hitting something. There's [spoiler]10[/spoiler] areas, and it was very rare to fall more than one down at a time; usually it was more like a quarter of an area. Each is decently unique, usually adding a new permanent or one-off mechanic. Some were more fair fun than others ([spoiler]rocket boosters and that table where you have to get to 200[/spoiler], I'm looking at you), but overall it was great! Yes it does indeed have wayy stronger gravity than a traditional table, but you get used to it pretty quickly, and I didn't find it to be a downside. I played it while streaming and talking to friends, and it was a great thing to do without spending too too much thought on it. Very surprised it's not more popular!
