About Frogman Magmaborn

Frogman wakes up underground - without memories, surrounded by magma and turned into a monster. All around him are mindless monsters, intent on destroying anything alive. He finds a few other sentient monsters - people Reborn there like him. Together, they try to survive.
Eventually, they die.
And are Reborn again, from a different place, still stuck underground.

Key features:
  • Tactical RPG gameplay - Battle your way out with a small squad in a variety of hand-crafted levels, with multiple objectives & events!
  • Roguelike mechanics - Once Frogman dies, he's Reborn from a different place. Buy permanent upgrades, then set out again!
  • Story integration - Each level can feature new events, and even characters, from over 50 different conversations. Dying and returning is a core aspect of the story!
  • Advanced modding tools - Almost every aspect of the game can be modded with Frog Forge - built alongside the game directly for this purpose. Create & edit maps, events, characters, classes and more!
  • Completely free & open source - Both the game and Frog Forge are free & open source, with an MIT license!

"Frogman Magmaborn" is a godawfully bad RPG Maker-like (actually worse than an RPG Maker game, if that is possible) JRPG with a frog theme (huh) and some of the worst graphics to ever insult the gaming industry. Needless to say, this is a huge failure. What do you do in the game? It's a combat focused JRPG with a bunch of procgen used as a substitute for content. The "game" here, such as it is, is of a pretty low technical standard. The implementation is basic, minmimum effort stuff, more like a 'weekend project' rather than a commercial/professional product... it's bad even compared to most amateur made games. An experimental piece... and the experiment is "can I spend $100 on Steam Direct and then call myself a game dev?" While that $100 spend on Steam Direct probably made the developers feel good about themselves, we have to ask why this kind of thing is good for gamers. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than…

This game owns. If you like Fire Emblem or other Strategy RPGs, you'll find a lot to like in its snappy runs that make you think really hard about the collective power and survivability of your team and how the various perks can help. Fun story/characters as well, a party of monsters is one of my favorite trope subversion in games.

frogman is a great game. a little buggy with the dialogs but i've been in contact with the creator and he will fix all the issues and release a new patch. the combat system is challenging and harsh but fair, it's a rogue-like free game with a good plot and you can really feel the progress you make. i highly recommend everyone to play

Frogman Magmaborn surprised me. I met the developer at a TTRPG night, and heard about them releasing the game on steam. I said I will check it out, expecting a cute little indie title. What I got, was a cute little indie Title that gripped my attention after a bit of a goofy start, and suddenly sported a surprising amount of intruige and story! Frogman is clearly a labor of love, the rough edges that result from being a one-person-project are part of the charm, and I highly recommend for people to check it out. Will Frogman change your life? Probably not. But it will make you appreciate how much effort people can put into weird little indie titles like these. In the end, I had way more fun than I expected and am looking forward to a second run, as I am still missing a lot of the story that I haven't seen yet!
