街机女孩不会认输!! is a very cute and surprisingly heartfelt visual novel that I enjoyed much more than I expected. I follow Asano, a newcomer to the rhythm game scene, as she starts spending time at an arcade and meets more experienced players. I liked the simple setup because the arcade becomes a believable place for the characters to meet, have fun and gradually reveal more about themselves. The gameplay is mostly focused on reading dialogue and following the story, so this is definitely more of a narrative experience than a traditional game. I actually think that works well here because the writing and characters are clearly the main attraction. There are no complicated branching decisions to worry about, which lets me simply follow Asano's experience and see where it leads. The rhythm game setting gives the story a lot of personality. I liked how the arcade feels like a social space rather than simply being a backdrop for gameplay. Meeting experienced players and learning more about their lives makes the setting feel surprisingly warm.
