"Games For The Table" is a basic chessboard app with three games, Chess, Checkers and a hybrid that includes elements of both. The developer seems unaware that you can play Chess and Checkers online in a web browser for free, so wasted $100 on Steam Direct with a version you have to add to your library and download, when opening Chrome is a lot quicker. I guess a lot of developers waste no energy in thinking before they publish things nobody is going to want. And as testament to this proven theory, the game was a complete flop here on Steam Direct. The game is really simple and unambitious in terms of implementation, more of a tech demo or one of those cases where an amateur developer spends $100 to publish something on Steam Direct to see if it's possible. Yes, obviously it's possible. A proof of concept, tech demo, or something that's less than a little blip on the radar isn't offering anything truly valuable to gamers. In terms of visuals, this features fairly low quality low poly 3D graphics which will deter a lot of gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and while some developers struggle with creating high quality visuals, failing to do so is a disservice …
4.5/10 Checkers+chess mix TLDR: Despite the terrible UI and lack of an AI opponent, there is an interesting board game where you move checker pieces, and when they reach the other side of the board, they can turn into chess pieces. This deserved a proper implementation. Good: + free + interesting/unique idea of a chess+checkers mix So-so: +/- the game is 3D and, for some reason, is heavy on CPU usage. However, all pieces here are basically just cylinders, and even the chess pieces are just checkers with 2D images of chess pieces layered over them. This game should have been just 2D instead if the dev doesn't have the models for proper chess pieces +/- no music +/- there is an online mode with certainly no one online. Indie games should never rely on online multiplayer +/- there is an implementation of the simple checkers and the simple chess here but those are of little interest. The chess+checkers mix should be the first in the list Bad: - terribly designed UI, with text labels in huge font, barely fitting into the available space. I wonder why the dev would hate their game so much because UI is really the easiest thing to make - no AI opponent. Which make this game essentiall…
