after putting some time into this game, getting used to its really weird systems for a couple hours, i get it. this game rocks. doesnt deserve mixed reviews at all, i definitely find it more fun than the predecessor GoNNER 1 (which has significantly better reviews). in retrospect, i at first agreed with a lot of the negative reviews; that the game is too opaque, and there's too much going on - and it's not helped by the aoe/pop-in effect can make things a lot more disorienting. but you eventually do get a grip on things, and the game becomes a fluid frantic frenzy of colorful ♥♥♥♥, it rocks. Playing with a controller helps (i use steam/xbox). i was using X to shoot, not realizing i could use the right stick and right bumper to shoot, and left trigger to jump. when i started using those controls, the game felt way better.

My recommendation of GONNER2 is a bit reluctant. While the gameplay felt a bit too confusing at times, the visual style is just so unique and fun. I think it's worth playing a bit just to see stuff moving around. I've seen some people in the reviews say that the first one is a lot better (and it seems to have similar aesthetics), so maybe try that one instead if you like what you see...? Anyway, looks lovely, can be a bit overwhelming.

GONNER2 is very enjoyable to play. The gameplay is fun and smooth on a controller. The different weapons and power-ups offers many possibilities, and the Headless/Gunless/Packless challenges are gratifiting (while being very demending). The procedural generation is quite impressive too, I don't think I ever got an issue in my dozens of hours. But it also feels way less inspired than its predecessor. I would have loved some more interactivities, easter-eggs and secret areas: overall some new lore. It might sound rude, but it feels a bit like a Gonner1.5 with coop. After 5 years you can still got stuck between 2 levels, and the hitboxes can sometimes be clanky around some surfaces. I don't think the game receive any update after launch, which sounds like a miss opportunity (no BLÜEBERRY Edition-like update). But that's maybe a me-problem. Still I'll be there if one day there is a follow-up game.
Achievement hunters beware! There is a seemingly impossible to get achievement!
This achievement is called 'nice' and while we are pretty certain it requires a level of combo (despite the game being 5 years old) there is still no concrete answer for the actual requirement. I am still doing attempts and tests, but for the time being assume its impossible without cheating! I do like the game, it's fast paced, colorful, the gameplay feel fun, and it's very unique. However, it's not the type of game that has a lot of replay value for the average person, which would be fine if the game wasn't as short as it is. For me, if there weren't some difficult achievements to get, I would've had probably around 2-3 hours of playtime. Considering the full price and the impossible (as of writing) to obtain achievement, i can't recommend it. However, if you don't care about the achievement and you get a good sale price (right now €2,59) I would recommend it.
