About Gridrunner Revolution
Gridrunner Revolution is a game which has evolved over 27 years. The original Gridrunner games were created for the Commodore 64 and Vic-20 back in 1982. The company that made the games, Llamasoft, are now one of the longest established game developers in existence and over the intervening years have done pioneering work in the field of music visualization as well as developing genre-defining games such as Tempest 2000 and the extraordinary Space Giraffe.
Gridrunner Revolution takes some core ideas from those old Commodore games and extrapolates them forward to create a game that is both modern and exceptionally beautiful. The gameplay goes way beyond mere shooting and leads players to score highly by engaging with the game's mechanic to produce aesthetically pleasing abstract graphics “performances” as they play.
Several game modes are included, along with simulations of the original Vic and C64 games so that players can see for themselves the game's history and how it has evolved in the 21st century.

Non-scrolling multidirectional (360 degrees) shoot 'em up. Extremely repetitive techno beats. Game deserved better - new age, progressive rock, synthwave electro, etc. - something with an actual melody. Lots of particles and effects could make the screen hard to read, but it was part of the intended "psychedelic" experience, I suppose. No leaderboards. The voices got annoying real fast, especially "Attention" and "Oops! Loser". The game controlled fine with mouse or gamepad, but it was more responsive with mouse. Lots of levels but it was mostly the same thing. The game lost my interest relatively quickly.5 found this helpful
For those of you with high refresh rate monitors, the game will play too fast when it's above 60hz, so I recommend turning the refresh rate down (unless you like playing it that way for some reason). Aside from that, it's another excellent Llamasoft game, especially when played with a mouse or the Steam Deck's trackpad. LOVELY PRETTY SHEEPY.1 found this helpful
I played this game for almost 2 hours before I realized it had been running too fast. I just thought it was really, really hard or I was really, really bad at video games. Since it was so impossible to play, I barely ever played it. Then I saw a YouTube video of someone else playing it and it wasn't nearly as fast as mine. Turns out I needed to go in the NVIDIA control panel and set this game to run at a Maximum of 60 FPS. Now it is running much slower and I got my best score. I feel like this is something the programmer should have taken care of, but at least I got it fixed on my end. This game no longer seems impossible and I will play it more.
Brilliaaaaant!
Triggered my epilepsy. And I don't even have epilepsy.
I have been a big fan of Jeff minter since the early days on the Vic-20 with games like Traxx, Defender and the original Gridrunner. I've played a lot of his modern PC games including Tempest which are all good, but there is something about this game which really captures the original spirit of Minters work. I think it could be the samples and general crazy graphics which all blend really nicely. Anyway for any old school Jeff Minter fans, this is a winner. Just as much fun with a mouse as it is with a controller.
