Ultratron

Had to refund, due to a hand injury I'm incapable of playing anything using mouse\kb. Unfortunately despite it saying it's controller compatible and that my controller should work fine (Steam controller) I couldn't get it to work at all, and learned only after that it requires a wired Xbox 360 controller and a series of hoops to get that to even work.

'Ultratron' is a slick, high-energy tribute to the golden age of twin-stick shooters, successfully modernizing the Robotron: 2084 formula with a vibrant neon aesthetic and a rewarding progression system. The game’s primary strength lies in its addictive "risk versus reward" gameplay loop, where players must balance the frantic destruction of robotic swarms with the tactical collection of fruit and coins to fund vital upgrades. The addition of customizable drones and diverse power-ups provides a layer of depth that keeps the combat from feeling like a simple exercise in reflexes, while the escalating visual chaos and pulsing electronic soundtrack create a highly immersive arcade atmosphere. However, the game’s rigid adherence to its retro roots means that the experience can become repetitive during extended play sessions. Too stylized for its own good. (Unfortunately, the hallmark of Puppygames. It's too much of a good thing tbf.) Popped in after a long break as I'm having a "twin-stick" moment. ;) ...To find it as off-putting as I remembered. Almost completely lacking in modern conventional QoL, configurability, and esp. accessibility options. Superficially fun but difficult to go very deep on. Some very demanding achievements, which, given the above, will probably drive you crazy before you get them. Frames capped at 60 for some aggravating reason. And the motion has an odd clunkiness to it, like a game that is very visibly grid-based -- almost like a turn-based game -- vs. the buttery coin-op smoothness of ... y'know... the game they're ripping off. Also the entire game takes place in an odd vignette. Supposed to simulate said coin-op, maybe? It's basically letterboxed to ~4:3 / ~50% of your widescreen screen-area. Ick.

Wow this game is fun. Especially if you love Robotron 2084 the way I do. I'm picky about art styles, and I like this one a lot.
