I had mixed feelings about this game. The gameplay loop is pretty simple. You create a series of different constellations and then various members of a small community will approach and ask you questions. You answer these questions by presenting them with one of the constellations. The complexity comes in from both the ambiguity of the meaning of the constellations and the uncertainty of how the individual will interpret your choice. Obviously with such simple game mechanics, the game relies heavily on its story to maintain player interest. And it is a clever story but more to the point, it tells that story in such an unusual way that it is quite gripping at the start. Unfortunately, I feel that it doesn't hold up as the game continues. It seems incredible to say for a game that I 100% completed in under 4 hours, but I feel that it went on too long. I'm giving it a recommend because it is was a very unique game with an interesting premise, but I'd probably only grab it on sale (personally, I got it for about $1 and that felt fair).

Amazing game, haven't played anything like it. This is the type of game that is best enjoyed going in blind. I found the narration to be overstimulating.

a very interesting game of choices, faith, community, and the pitfalls of it all. game is slow and i wish the "star" mechanics were better, but this story will take you on a ride. recommended on sale.

You are a soothsayer in a cave (a grotto, if you will). Denizens of the local village come to you for guidance and you consult the stars to provide it. Only, the stars are ambiguous; each of the constellations you use as your tools not only represents something visually (animals, objects, concepts), but they come with a cryptic representation of their meaning. The people, too, are unpredictable, and will draw their own conclusions based on the symbols you show and the riddles they come with. Grotto is somewhere between a strict narrative game and, I don't know, a deductive puzzler? At first it feels like simply finding all the different constellations to get a full library of responses is the main gameplay element, but the game quickly teaches you to be careful with your guidance: your interpretation of a particular constellation may be wildly different to how another person interprets it. You start to plan things tactically: understanding the nuances of the constellations that in practice act as your words, and second-guessing what conclusions each of the people you speak to (from children to one-minded warchiefs) would drive from them, in order to push them towards the decisio…

Your adventure in Grotto begins inside a dark cavern, where you only notice a rift in the cave ceiling and some figures on the wall next to you. Your eyes can see nothing until a fire ignites in the other section of the lair, prompting you to investigate its source. The intro is already anticlimactic for a graphic adventure, yet it will lead you to unveil your own destiny and that of those who come to seek your advice. The tribe of the Brutes is truly fascinating. Their mix of brutality in certain practices, contrasted with their deep integration with nature, represents the greatest dichotomy the work conveys. Their care for one another alongside their uncompromising intolerance toward anyone who transgresses the laws. As events unfold, it will be up to you to guide them through your prophecies; you can either feel responsible for the advice you give or remain detached and impassive inside the cave that shields you from the outside world. The narrative choices and the art style are the highlights of the title, leaving you completely awestruck.
