Guess The Sound

[b] Guess the Sound [/b] does basically what the title would suggest. A series of sounds are played and you have to guess what the sound is. The attention changes slightly when we are asked to guess what someone is doing or asked a technical question on music theory or similar. This is when the game requires some kind of searching because if you are not musically trained then an internet search is the only way forward. Playing a sound and trying to guess what it is was quite fun actually and I enjoyed the challenge of those. Sometimes, if you are close to the answer then you are given subtle nudges by text to steer you in the right direction, and there are also three clues you can use which give ever increasing helpfulness. The part of the game I didn’t really enjoy were the “What am I doing?” questions and the more abstract answers which were just silly. For example, the sound of a glass chiming before a speech was not “Speech” or “Attention”. The answer was [spoiler]“patience”.[/spoiler] When a sound of someone typing on a keyboard was presented, the answer wasn’t “Typing” but this generated a hint saying “What am I typing?” The answer was [spoiler]“Guess the Sound.”[/spoiler]…

This is an interesting game in which you have to write down what is causing the sound. You start with several sections that look like a skill tree in RPG games, with only one available option you can click. When you solve this puzzle, you open access to any other puzzle connected to it with lines. It is a fun replacement for a stage select menu and gives you the option to try other puzzles instead of going through them in a linear path. Clicking on a stage node takes you to the main screen, where you have a hint at the top, a play button that triggers the sound, and a box where you write your answer. I like that the game gives feedback based on your answers. If it is entirely wrong, you get a standard incorrect answer. But if you are somewhat close, you receive a hint. For instance, if you write thunder when the answer is storm, you get feedback that thunder is part of it. Or if you write birds for the answer crickets, the feedback says that birds are indeed noisy. Still, there are some feedback situations that can be annoying. For instance, the answer wind chime triggers the response that you are close and should check if you wrote it correctly. I very much enjoyed the game: it was cozy and chill, but challenging at times, making it just the right balanced experience for me. The overall vibe is quite relaxing and I like that there are no timers, scores, points, etc. You just choose your own pace and disconnect for a while. The game is designed to give some sort of hint whenever you guess wrong (but still somehow close enough) to steer you in the right direction. Some of the sounds were pretty straightforward to guess, others were a bit more niche so I had to combine several such hints (and sometimes use the help of Google). But, honestly, once I learned how to play a bit with these "wrong guesses" it became one of the most entertaining bits of the game for me, since the developer uses this mechanic also to share personal experiences, fun facts and random thoughts. So, over time, you really have the impression of developing a relationship with the creator and you can see they pour all of themselves into it. There are some aesthetic limitations and a few things in the UX that might need some more polishing, which I think is due to the game being a solo dev project, but for the price ... it was totally worth it for me.
