HamsterCraft is a quirky and surprisingly complex rendition of the tower defense genre. It is a very ambitious game with multiple gameplay systems and mechanics that you have to learn in order to survive the onslaught of the cheese monsters. Being a solodev title, the graphics and sounds are simple, functional and delightful in a symphatic way. The nonsensical humor and the juxtaposition of cuteness with military clichés works pretty well. There are issues with pacing of the game as well as balance of the different systems. Some levels also feel a bit too lengthy for my taste. All this leads to a tactical, yet chaotic and sometimes frustrating experience. And yet, having your hamsters massacring a horde of monsters feels strangely addicting. The dev is working to fix any problems reported by players. Please note, that I am not a fan of the tower defense genre, so your mileage may vary. I was gifted the game by the developer with no strings attached. Thus, I have tried to keep my review as honest as possible.
