About Hell Well

Survive as a dark sorcerer and collect fallen spirits to turn them into your own unholy defense against corrupt angels!

Take the role of a dark sorcerer as you defend yourself against waves of angels seeking to destroy you! Presented in retro 4-tone style, Hell Well is a top-down tower defense survival game where your downfall is inevitable, but the challenge is to survive and take down as many foes as possible before your ultimate demise.

Collect fallen spirits and use them to set up demonic totem-like defenses to fend off holy attackers, then upgrade abilities and increase the level of your minions to continue growing your forces across procedurally generated ruins and graveyards.

Features:
  • Survive waves of enemies in a mix of top-down action and tower defense!
  • Collect fallen spirits and revive them as demonic defensive weaponry.
  • Evade enemies and use spells to fend them off or lure them into traps!
  • Collect new items in the dungeon hub and earn new color palettes.
  • Upgrade your magic spells or level up your turrets with quick-thinking strategy!

Hey there, nya! I stumbled upon this game by pure luck after encountering something similar earlier this week, meow. I've been yearning to dive into minimalist-style games with a limited color palette, and this one is just paw-sitively adorable! It fills my heart with joy in a way I haven't experienced in games for a whisker's age. I Go through Games so You Don't have to: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/Curlyxxx I'm hoping to paw-ssibly connect with the developer because this game has whisker-twitchingly inspired me to try my paw at game creation. If you, dear developer-san, are reading this, any info or guidance you could share through this review would be like a purr-fectly placed scratching post to help me climb the game development tree. Thank you for unleashing this masterpiece of a game upon the world. It's truly my muse as I navigate this uncharted territory, even if my kitty instincts aren't sure which direction to pounce in just yet. Meowch appreciated!

While there are some promising ideas and design choices, the content is just not there. You get the same towers types, character and tower upgrades. There are some different enemy types, but you always get the same ones depending on the wave number. The gameplay itself is somewhat bland, you just walk around and shoot, trying to use your towers and avoid damage to them. One could possibly enjoy improving and perfecting the strategy involved, but I'm not interested enough for that due to the severe lack of variety.

I tried to get into this but it took little to realize that the situations showed off by the screenshots and trailer are from larger later levels. The controls are not remappable and very inconvenient, making it impossible to act quickly, so much so I sometimes ended up summoning demons when I didn't intend to, and it gets only worse as the numbers of options to cycle through grows. The graphics are minimalistic, with several unlockable palettes although, like in other games from the same developer with such gimmick, some are an eye strain rather than anything else. The general strategy is to place demons in safer areas while the player maneuvers enemies, invariably rushing against the sorcerer, to fall into their attack range while not damaging the demons themselves, all while collecting dropped souls and taking random upgrades between waves. Even forgiving the controls, it's not really fun to play, as most often the strategy is reduced to circling around, launching really slow fireballs while hoping for those pesky enemies to fall down. And as it can often happen with random generation, some levels may have too many open spaces with little safe spots to place demons, or have "…
