Heroes Rise: The Hero Project

While the first game in the series was painfully railroaded with little to no choices that greatly impacted the narrative, at least it had an interesting story where you can try your best to help others, stop the bad guys, or have fun in other ways. "Heroes Rise: The Hero Project", however, plays like a reality show where it’s impossible to decipher what the choices will do beforehand. At numerous points did I pick something that I believed would do one thing, only for something else to happen, ruining the experience. Unless you accidentally select the intended route, you’ll not have a good time, and since I apparently picked the wrong option every chance I got, I hated the experience. I’ve played through the game previously and enjoyed it. However, back then, I played as a goody-two-shoes, and the suitable choices meshed with the intended route much better than my current playthrough did. As such, how railroaded the story is was hidden to a greater degree. (1/10)

[h1]JUST NOT GOOD[/h1] Heroes Rise: The Hero Project is one of those games where I didn't have high expectations after the first game, but I still somehow ended up disappointed. I actually prefer the plot idea here to the one from The Prodigy - a reality show for superheroes is simply much more interesting than the generic "zero to hero" story. There are also some other cool ideas sprinkled throughout the story, but that's where the good stuff ends. The game is simply not good on a technical level. The writing feels like a downgrade (although it's still bearable), but the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ pacing and inconsequential choices were just unforgivable. You can have the best ideas in the world, but they won't matter if you don't know how to execute them. Unfortunately, [b]I can't recommend it[/b]. The Hero Project is basically fanfic-level interactive fiction, and I'm not even talking about high-quality fanfics. There are some good moments, but they're too few and far between. I dont like this game despite its good writing for two reasons: 1. It takes place in a trashy reality-show and thats exactly what happens. Fights, manifactured tension, nosensical threads and reactions from npcs because of your choices. It also leads to a much more streamlined game that limits your ability to choose. 2. Destroying the cartasis from the end of the last game, making a majority of the villians untouchable and going the "everyone dumps on the protagonist" route moves this towards a sadist show. Unless you play as the pollyanna, you wount have a good time.

After having 'played' through the Heroes Rise series several times over, I can only describe it, and this installment, as painfully mediocre. Sergi's writing might be adequate for a high-school audience, but if you've matured past that stage it leaves much to be desired.
