About Hnefatafl

Hnefatafl is an ancient Scandinavian board game whose variants were played all over medieval Europe before chess was even invented. In those so called Tafl games two differently sized armies fight each other. The invading black army tries to capture the white king, while the defending white army tries to protect their king and help him escape.

Often also called the Game of the Vikings Hnefatafl tells many stories, like the Moskowites' invasion of Sweden or the Viking hordes pillaging Britain. But no matter what the story is, one thing always stays the same: The hunt for the king.

Even though the rules aren't complicated the game offers fascinating strategies and rewards tactical play. Try to surround the enemy pieces, plan ahead, lay traps and force your opponent into surrender. Will you capture the king for gold and glory? Can the loyal guards hold back the invading forces and secure the flight of their king?

You can even create your own custom variants -- with over 200,000 different variants possible -- for online or offline play! Add jumping pieces, shieldwalls, undying guards, various setps and much more.

From beginner level to advanced games, this game has it all. 8 different AIs, and 19 default/popular game layout and rule sets, plus thousands of variants that you can DIY. This is awesome! Love it, and thank you for making this game. p.s. while AIs are awesome, online games sort of dead majority of achievements need to play it online with another player

At first, I got quite frustrated that I wasn't able to win over the AI, but with some time, dedication, and perseverance, I managed to eventually win over the AI. It's quite a challenging game in which you must really put your brain to work properly in order to elaborate several strategies to win over a tough AI opponent. One word of advice on the matter: the AI is not so easy to outsmart/beat. One has to be quite intelligent and use a combination of very good moves and carefully-crafted strategies in order to win. Now regarding the graphics, I found them pleasant and quite alright as it was the case of the soundtrack as well. The two really work well in conjunction in order to add to the overall atmosphere/ambient of the game. All in all, a good game truly worth playing, especially if you are into chess, Norse culture, and Norse history as well. All the best and have fun playing this game! Take care and stay safe as well!

I of course haven't played enough yet to evaluate the AI, and haven't tried the online features, but there is an immediately apparent level of polish and care in the presentation/UI that frankly took me aback (in a really positive way). I did not expect this to feel as premium-tier as it does.
