Holy Shoot

Holy Shoot wants to be RoboQuest or Gunfire Reborn set in hell. That is a great premise. Unfortunately, it never does any part of the roguelike shooter formula well enough to compete with either game. After only a few runs, my level-up screen became permanently stuck over the game. I could not close it, pause, escape, or recover the run. There is also a bug after the first boss that forces controller players to grab a mouse to click through the next menu. Between problems like these and the overall controller implementation, the game clearly was not properly tested with a controller before reaching 1.0. Controller aiming is tragically bad. There is no meaningful aim assist, and the hitboxes seem concentrated around the dead center of each enemy. You have to aim with unreasonable precision while targeting an unusually narrow area. Some weapons with recoil make this more manageable because the recoil can compensate for the poor aiming design, so controller players should experiment with different weapons before giving up. I feel like this game is missing a lot. And by a lot i mean.... a LOT There is positioning for extra things in the cross rooms and there are clearly going to be more things in the game but it just doesn't have any of them yet. I could understand if this was an early access or a beta etc. But to say this is complete and fully released I'm a bit dissappointed. It has potential, don't get me wrong, but it's been a month and no updates and no unlocking of the rest of the game. I just can't reccommend it as a full grown and fleshed out game.

I cannot recommend this game at this time. I just got hard locked in a run cause of a door closing on me, get to explore the infinite map tho lol Uhh, yeah beyond that, get rid of the "100% hit rate" enemies, meaning the skull and horned demon. Should never have an enemy that always hits you no matter what, and they do cause they will just appear around corners going mach 10 cause they don't path properly and get stuck in attack movement on walls then just slingshot into you. Weapons, honestly not a lot of originality or differentiation in a lot of weapons, ie machine gun variations, but then you get like, grenade shotgun which is cool, same with the duckgun! I want to like it, but I don't like it cause no enemy should get that kind of just "yeah you take damage no matter what," all the weapons need some level of unique ability or gimmick, and I can't like it cause its broken to boot, hard lock out of the next area by the door that prevents back tracking.

The game is fun, but the upgrade tree feels lackluster and the game feels shallow and incomplete. I beat the game with 100% achievements in under 4 hours. They were a fun 4 hours, but not really worth the price. Many of the guns feel too similar and there are a lot that just aren't worth using at all compared to others, making each run end up feeling the exact same. It's worth playing if you already own it, but I can't recommend buying it in its current state.

Great little indie roguelike with real passion behind it. Devs that take feedback from the community and implement changes to address given feedback. I played this during early access and had some fun with it and noticed a few things. I streamed it and talked about my criticisms live. When the game hit full release all the of the issues I had mentioned in my stream whether it was balance issues with guns, bosses being too easy or slightly unbalanced with some abilities, to holes in the map you could fall through they were fixed. Big love to Tale Era Interactive for clearly trying to make a game they are proud of. If content continues to come to this game overtime I will keep coming back just for the fun of it. For $13 this game is well worth your time

Nothing to complain about when it comes to the technical aspects of the game. It runs well, no glitches or anything in my play through. I do take issue with a couple of aspects to the game, due to how short it is, the lack of synergy and uniqueness to the roguelike skills/upgrades you receive each run, and the endless mode being lacking, and finally, how easy the game is overall to play. I wouldn't recommend this game, you will not get enough game out of it for how much you're paying. You could probably beat this game and still return it if you watch a play through.
