"Hope of Taru" is a rather poorly, if genuinely made 2D retro action platformer. The player wakes up in a changed world and must uncover their past to restore life to the petrified village of Taru. The story unfolds over six challenging levels, focusing on collecting fragments and delivering them to a priest to complete a ritual... all of which involves some really unpolished, low quality platforming. What do you do in the game? It's essentially very weak Mario Bros type casual platforming with a bunch of badly written visual novel text slapped on... you know, another case of a developer not understanding the "Show, don't tell" axiom of game development. The game features really lacklustre 2D visuals (does the developer not know 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid-1990s?). Gamers don't spend thousands of dollars on gaming rigs and the latest 3D graphics cards to play 2D games. Even mobile phones and game consoles can do 3D graphics now. There's no excuse. On pricing, this is only free in a rudimentary sense... the developer has their hand out for a $2 USD "donation" for this as you're expected to buy soundtrack DLC from Steam to "support" the "developer"... digital pa…
