You need to already know how to play Japanese Mahjong, as there is no tutorial. You can look up a guide but for me it's way more effort than I'm willing to put in for a game of this genre. Other than that, the game is well made, you unlock static CGs on defeat, with good voice acting and sfx.6 found this helpful

Illegal Mahjong is a strikingly unconventional take on a classic tabletop game, reimagined through a dramatic narrative lens and layered with progression systems more commonly associated with RPGs than traditional mahjong simulators. Teetering between yay and nay on the recommended. Thumbs up only because it is an enjoyable Mahjong game IF you already know how to play Mahjong...which I don't. I recognize that the game serves it purpose and is a good indie version with a story and R18 content (needs an off site patch), but I do wish it had some sort of tutorial to teach newbies how to play Mahjong. Watching YT tutorial videos while playing, still didn't help me to understand Mahjong. Avoid if you don't know how to play Mahjong or have no plans to learn. As far as the story goes, I'm guessing it needs that offsite patch, because there was no story present, it just tosses you right in the game.
