About In Other Waters
Play as an AI guiding a xenobiologist through an alien ocean, discovering strange creatures and uncovering the mysteries of an abandoned planet while building trust through limited communication. Explore a dynamic underwater world with elegant controls, catalogue bizarre alien life through observation and experimentation, and gradually uncover dark secrets that challenge what it means to be alive in a world of environmental collapse.
When Ellery is called to planet Gliese 677Cc by Minae Nomura, only to arrive at an abandoned base, she finds herself adrift in an ocean of secrets, with little more than a malfunctioning diving suit and a strange AI to guide her. You are this AI.
Guide Ellery—and keep her safe—as you dive deeper and explore an underwater alien landscape. The planet’s unique life, and its dark history, are yours to uncover and the bond between you and Ellery will be tested by the secrets you learn. Through this shifting narrative, In Other Waters asks questions about the nature of “natural” and “artificial” life, and investigates what it means to be a human in an epoch of extreme environmental destruction. For life to continue, it must change.
Freely dive into an expansive section of seafloor, from shimmering reefs to inky depths. Unlock upgrades and make discoveries that allow you to open up new paths, uncovering strange creatures and environments as you do.
Navigate an elegant, intuitive UI via gamepad or mouse controls. Interpret signals, set headings, and map the ocean through experimentation and intuition.
Discover and catalogue species through observation, scanning, taking samples, and interacting with alien life. Read Ellery’s notes, look at her sketches, and help her classify an entirely new ecosystem.
Choose whether to study creatures, investigate secrets or dive new areas, then come back to your base to study samples in the lab, chat to Ellery or read her journals to understand more about this world.
Through limited communication learn more about the person whose suit you inhabit, and help guide her towards a terrible truth. What you experience together will bring you closer.

Beautiful artstyle, wonderful story, love the lesbians, love being a little AI in a suit trying to keep one of my lesbians alive. While the screen is made up of dots and terrain, the descriptions are written so well and the soundscape so immersive i can almost see the alien ocean. I've played it twice through now and ill probably go again!2 found this helpful
a game about water but no water
100% recommended! I was so invested in the story all the way through. Immersion is perfect. I've finished the story in about 6 hours, but the exploration and quests are currently at 60%. I'll definitely keep playing to finish and to find out all I can. I'm captivated. Need. to. know. everything.
TLDR: In Other Waters is effectively a visual novel. Neat story premise, but man the gameplay is tedious.
Story
You are a sentient operating system piloted by a xenobiologist in an ocean-covered planet. Your goal is to investigate the alien life and to slowly uncover the mystery of what happened here.
Mechanics
You view the environment through a minimalistic HUD. You press space to scan the area, revealing nodes. You click a node, press W to turn toward it, then press W again to move to it. Then you might collect resources (power/oxygen), and there might be some story dialog. Repeat for 6 hours.
Absolutely wonderful little game, very simplistic in a good way. I managed to complete it in around 6 hours. So much of the beauty of this game is in its absolutely phenomenal soundtrack and how it gels with the story and atmosphere. The well-designed minimalist computer UI also really lets you fill in the blanks. Short but sweet, kind of gives me nostalgia for Endless Ocean.
Narrative and great concepts. The music and mechanics and text combined to make a very submersive experience.
