Under The Waves

Slow, Slow, Slow grind with cumbersome movements, dry story and the all too familiar save the planet theme. You seem to be a deep water garbage man fixing oil leaks and picking up trash. it's nothing like Subnautica, which is fun and has a water tight story line. This is just not my "cup of tea" as its target audience would probably say.

So good. Nice soundtrack. This one makes me miss diving.

Very "mid". The game is most story-oriented, but the slow and very annoying, repetitive gameplay still takes a lot of time. You can't pick things up without exiting your submersible and the controls are clunky. The storyline does not tie up many of the loose ends, the only one that it does tie up is the protagonist's trauma. Speaking of trauma - I found it hard to empathise with the main characters for several reasons. First being the lack of facial animation, proper lipsync (in 2025 game really?) or any kind of buildup. You are thrown into the storyline with the premise of the character having suffered a loss that leaves him in a semi-delirious state and that is all you ever know about him. None of his actual personality is revealed, save for his wife trying to talk sense into him over the phone. Only way to emphathise with the guy with this kind of premise is having suffered a similar trauma yourself, which hopefully nobody would ever have to, so a game could not have been written with that expectation. First and foremost, do not go into this game expecting another Subnautica. The game does feature survival and crafting elements, but they are definitely not the primary focus. Under the Waves is ultimately a narrative driven game with exploration. With that out of the way, would I recommend this game? The environment is wide and deep enough to provide meaningful exploration with varied visuals, plenty of secrets and points of interest, but not too large that faster modes of travel are necessary (sometimes Stan's thoughts or conversations with Tim fill the silent trip back to base, which is a plus). I think these are the strongest elements in the game Gameplay wise it's...fine. Collecting crafting materials and making upgrades will come naturally as you progress through the story, although you will have to explore a good bit to find all the blueprints and collectibles. Under The Waves is honestly one of those games that I started without expecting too much and ended up really enjoying. You play as Stan, a professional diver working alone deep underwater in the North Sea. He is trying to deal with a very difficult moment from his past and basically uses the isolation of his job to escape from everything. I don't want to say too much because the story is definitely something you should experience yourself. The atmosphere is easily my favorite part of the game. Being completely alone underwater, exploring abandoned places and hearing the sounds of the ocean around you just feels amazing. Sometimes it's peaceful and relaxing and other times it can feel really uncomfortable, especially when you're very deep and surrounded by nothing but darkness. I also really enjoyed the diving and exploration. Using the small submarine to travel around the map, leaving it to explore different locations and searching for resources was actually very satisfying for me. Wow what an incredible game!!! It was truly a beautiful story but also heartbreaking but i think that was the purpose to see the good and the bad and to push on regardless what life throws at us. what i liked: - Visually stunning (Ultra graphics) - Lots of interactables - Puzzles - funny face making interactable (different than the other interactables) - Sealife photography - The Story/Plot - Open world exploration - Driving the Moon (Submarine) - All types of sea creatures - Beautiful nature sounds (whale singing,etc) I could go on, on how beautiful and incredible this game is and what i like about it. As much as theres lots to love about it there are a few things i didnt like. What i didnt like: - A few visual bugs - driving submarine physics can be difficult - Some puzzles aren't clear on what to do (had to look it up) - custom marker was way off not accurate at all - Conversations with Emma were a bit random (different conversation topics would just happen even if Stan was talking about something completely different, it would mess with the vibe and connection the player is trying to have with the character.).
