Combat follows a turn-based system, similar to other strategy games. Each turn, you move and attack with your characters, then end your turn and let enemy units act. This cycle continues until either your main unit or all enemies are defeated. After moving and attacking, a unit can either end its turn or consume food to heal. Every unit also has a special Qi-based attack. Qi regenerates slightly each turn, but each unit has a unique method for restoring more Qi, which is explained in the skill tab at the top of the screen. For example, one unit regains Qi by attacking on tree terrain, while another earns it by hitting beast-type enemies. Progression is balanced through experience: units only gain XP by dealing damage or using support skills on themselves or allies. When a unit levels up, you choose one of several rewards: more health, a skill point, a boost to a key stat (like accuracy for archers or spell power for magic users), or double the reward with a downside, such as reduced damage or gold. Fortunately, you can select which penalty to accept. Post-battle, you earn coins and materials, which are used in the forge to craft items, especially useful for repair kits.
