Onmyoji is a free-to-play turn-based RPG developed and published by NetEase Games that successfully blends Japanese folklore with strategic gameplay and impressive production values. Set in a beautifully realized version of the Heian era, the game follows the journey of an onmyoji who must restore harmony between the human world and the realm of spirits. Its narrative is built around encounters with demons, mythical creatures, and legendary figures, creating an engaging fantasy adventure rooted in traditional mythology rather than conventional medieval settings. The story gradually expands through cinematic sequences and character-driven episodes, giving players a compelling reason to continue exploring beyond simply collecting stronger units. Combat is the heart of the experience, offering a tactical turn-based system that rewards careful planning instead of brute force. Players recruit an extensive roster of shikigami, each possessing distinct abilities, elemental strengths, and battlefield roles. Building an effective team involves balancing damage dealers, defensive characters, healers, and support specialists while also equipping them with customizable soul sets that signific…1 found this helpful
More low-quality shameless-copy-of-some-other-game(s) development from NetEase. I've spent more time getting account to load, waiting for game to downlaod, then update, then repair, then repair again, and then video content download, than actually being able to play the game. Zero effort put into PC port. UI is cluttered and chaotic. Game idea may have potential, but implementation is amateurish at best.1 found this helpful
Great game with Ancient Japanese style1 found this helpful
I've been enjoying Onmyoji a lot. The shikigami are unique, each with their own interesting mechanics, and I appreciate that the game doesn't rely heavily on fan service or "gooner bait" to attract players. That said, the game has a fairly steep learning curve and can feel overwhelming for new players. Building a shikigami is a long-term investment because Black Daruma is a very limited resource unless you're willing to spend money. The story can also be confusing at times, and S-Jade is quite expensive. Despite that, the game is genuinely very F2P-friendly. Progress simply takes time, patience, and resource management. One thing to keep in mind is that many shikigami are designed mainly for PvP. Also, whenever a new shikigami is released, pulling them doesn't necessarily mean you can use them right away—you'll still need enough resources to fully build them. Daily farming and event grinding can be time-consuming, but the game has an auto-battle system, so most repetitive content can be completed automatically. One of my biggest concerns is the Global version's visibility. The game still receives regular updates, but it feels like there's very little marketing compared to the C…
