About Javols VR

Go back in time by living a unique virtual experience that will make the invisible visible.
Travel in Antiquity / Stroll through the streets of the city or fly over it like a bird and go in search of antiques used in the 2nd century.

An emblematic place

The Javols-Anderitum archaeological site, Capital of ancient Gévaudan, is partly managed by the Occitanie / Pyrénées Méditerranée Region.

It is being promoted by the Region as part of an exemplary partnership with the State, the Department of Lozère, the Community of Communes of the Hautes Terres de l'Aubrac and the Municipality of Peyre-en-Aubrac.

In 2016, in addition to the in-situ landscaping and the archaeological interpretation route, the Region wishes to script a permanent route using an innovative and immersive medium.

In 2017, the "Javols 3D" augmented reality application was launched, the first step in the creation of an innovative mediation tool to promote regional heritage.

Towards a 100% virtualized environment

Building on this successful experience with a conquered audience, the project team, wishing to go further in creating an immersive experience, imagines a new roadmap.

The project must respond to the desire to make Culture accessible to everyone and everywhere and thus to make the Javols archaeological site known throughout the country. Capitalizing on the know-how acquired for Javols 3D, the project team offers a project approach based on co-design in agile mode and using UX DESIGN.

Continue the adventure / discovery, visiting the Archaeological Site and the Javols Museum

Javols VR is a free VR experience where you explore a real historical site recreated in Digital 3D with French narration and text. Worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok, was barely understandable. I took french in High School long ago, but don't remember squat. There is a free exploration mode and a guide tour on rails. The town was completely modeled with animated npcs. The building textures was simple. Has a map that points out place of interest. Try it, if you like History and understand French.

Javols VR is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this software. Instead of being a game, Javols VR is a software application that presents a recreation of an ancient French city in VR. That's it. Yep, this is Google Streetview, but you have to download and install it. What a joke. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, increases the players score if any rows were completed, then gives the gamer another block to position. Counter-Strike has a game loop where a player seeks another player, tests their skill against that player by shooting them or being shot, the computer rewards the player if they win, and then if the player survives, they repeat that loop. There's no loop here, no true interactive feedback. It simply is not a game, it cannot be "played". This has misleadingly been launched in the "Games" section of Steam instead of t…
