As a big fan of xianxia shows, I had never actually played a xianxia visual novel before, mostly because they are incredibly rare on Steam. When I came across Journey of Destiny: dependent origination, I was very excited to dive in, and it absolutely met my expectations. It is a fascinating read, filled with rich lore and classic cultivation tropes. Even though the CGs are AI-generated due to budget constraints, they are well-designed and do a great job of enhancing the experience. Remarkably, this game was developed in Ren’Py by a single person with no budget, yet it serves up 10 to 12 hours of deep storytelling and good writing. The game takes place in a parallel, superpowered world where cultivation rank and spiritual power mean everything. For many years, two massive factions have rivaled to be the most powerful of all clans: the Xuanyuan clan and the Tiansheng Demon Palace. Right from the start, you are presented with a choice between four different routes, focusing on the young heirs of the two major clans and two secondary characters from other clans. You experience the narrative strictly from your chosen character's perspective, and you get to access their distinct…14 found this helpful
Journey of Destiny is Cai Jiahe's VN format adaptation of the novel universe authored by 魔神吞天 (which was also partially adapted to manhua in the past). As the first part, or prologue, you don't get a complete start to end story here, but it does offer 10+ hours of content. While the original novels are set in the modern day, this visual novel adaptation is set in a fantasy cultivation world. The four routes change from whose perspective you experience the story, and follow each character from their early childhood to a specific event that segues into the next part of the story. With each further route, you learn more about the events, motivations and if you so want karmic ties between everyone. The routes should be played in order, as otherwise you will both have things spoiled for you as well as simultaneously miss out on necessary information to understand the plot. The very first hours have some excellent light-hearted comedic writing, but overall the setting is a brutal xanxia world with child slavery, blood sport, and extreme violence. Journey of Destiny is sure not potentially traumatizing in the way various Japanese VNs are, but it's also not an entirely harml…4 found this helpful
Journey of Destiny (Dependent Origination) is an engaging visual novel that blends ancient Chinese fantasy, mystery, and time-travel elements into a compelling story. The world-building is rich, and the conflict between the different factions kept me interested throughout the entire experience. The narrative gradually reveals its secrets. The game's strongest features is its choice-driven storytelling. Decisions, leading to multiple story paths and endings that encourage replayability. How different choices affected the characters and the broader fate of the world. Themes of destiny, betrayal, redemption, and personal growth are woven together effectively, creating an emotional and immersive journey. The combination of ancient fantasy, suspense, soul-fusion concepts, and time-travel mechanics gives the story a distinctive identity among visual novels. The artwork and presentation complement the narrative well, helping bring the setting and characters to life. For fans of visual novels, interactive fiction, and story-rich adventures where choices matter, Journey of Destiny is definitely worth checking out. It's an ambitious project with plenty of lore, branching narratives, and m…3 found this helpful
