Kathy Rain: Director's Cut

Great point-and-click game. I've absolutely rinsed the like of Broken Sword, Monkey Island, and had this recommended alongside Hobs Barrow. Just completed this and now purchased number two.

Once you overcome the a-typical feminist wannabe tough girl-boss character writing, the rest of the manuscript is quite decent. Really nice world they created for Kathy Rain, interesting dark occult story, great investigative tale, and very decent puzzles. It's like Full Throttle, but definitely has it's own unique identity. Really enjoyed going back and forth, using my memory and puzzle solving skills to figure out how to get to the next step or chapter. The type of game this is, I won't tell you if the graphics are good or bad obviously. With the art style being basic and pixalated, that matter is subjective. But, I can tell you it runs very smooth with no bugs so there's that, and the sound design, and voice acting are both top-notch! The character though, Kathy Rain herself, was definitely written by someone angry who's trying to push an agenda, and make a statement. Which is fine, I genuinely believe artists and developers should make the game they want to make, but I figured if a restaurant is vegan without a sign outside, and you're craving a burger, then buyer be warned.

Had this one in my library a while and eventually got to it as I was looking for something somewhat in the same realm as the Blackwell series from Wadjet Eye. I only have 1.5 hours here, but I actually finished it on Switch. If you really really enjoy noir style point and click games, then there is a lot to like here. The story is solid, the puzzles are fairly well done (even a casual puzzler like myself got all but one or two without a guide), it's not too long (a positive for me), and the presentation is all pretty quality (music, voice, art). However, for me it ended up being a little disappointing. Enough that I won't be continuing to the sequel. Most of it came down to the writing. And a lot of it is the main character. She just immediately comes off as some guys dream of what a tough bad girl is like. Wow, she rides a bike, she smokes (proudly smoking since 12 y/o!), she sleeps in and doesn't take anything seriously, and treats other people like ♥♥♥♥ for no reason! Awesome! Some of it gets better as the game goes on and her character evolves, but it never quite went away. Fell into one to many of the "men writing women" stereotypes. Solid worldbuilding and okayish puzzles, until the story completely unravels into supernatural/surrealism, that feels much more like a crutch for devs who wrote themselves into a corner than anything interesting.
