Kid Mystic: Enchanted Edition

When thinking back to those charming budget games you used to get in cereal boxes throughout the 90s alongside other unusual titles in the 'bargain bin' that turned out to be surprisingly decent (if uniquely flawed) experiences to be enjoyed, one of the most peculiar games out there has to be a little fantasy RPG for the PC that came out right at the tail end of the second millennium in August of 1999 which went by the name of 'Spooky Castle: The Adventures of Kid Mystic'. Funnily enough this has a rather intriguing story behind its initial release as this game had the notorious reputation of being a budget release product that proudly claimed itself as being "the best fantasy role playing game for the PC". The source of this bold claim coming from none other than the very box cover art itself remains a mystery as seemingly none of the reputable gaming magazines of the time ever came forward to take full ownership of this rather cheeky marketing stunt that, depending on your perspective, may or may not have helped shape the cult following of this very niche game in the decades since. I've played almost every version of this game from 1999 to now. This game is great and everything added only made it more enjoyable. The skills, the challenges, the new levels, everything is even better than I remembered. A true classic.

I've been a fan of Hamumu since 2001, when I first played [i]The Adventures of Bouapha: Spooky Castle[/i] on [i]eGames 101 Incredible Games Collector's Edition[/i]. I was so obsessed with that game that when my dad found [i]Spooky Castle: The Adventures of Kid Mystic[/i] in a KB Toys, it was a guaranteed slam dunk of a gift. I've returned to [i]Kid Mystic[/i] several times since, eventually enjoying the fruits of its 2004 update, and always appreciating the charm and hard work that Mike Hommel pours into his creations. I was beyond excited to learn that [i]Kid Mystic[/i] had a Steam port, complete with another update, and I was not disappointed! The gameplay remains solid, the visuals (although a bit dated in terms of resolution these days) are still charming, and the new additions are refreshing and welcome. I found the game a bit easier than I remembered it being, but I am also decades older and benefit from having beaten the game several times. The inclusion of 1999 and Classic modes proves just how much of a love letter this is to Hamumu fans (not to mention the ability to switch to the "classic music," which is just the same music in a lossier format. I still think about Spooky Castle from time to time. I feel like I [i]need[/i] to keep thinking about it, because I'm worried I'm the only one who remembers it. How many people ever experienced Spooky Castle, and how many of those still have any lasting memory of it after two decades? Am I the last person keeping it alive in the collective consciousness by continuing to think about it? And does that mean, if I stop thinking about it, then it will no longer exist? Or what if I made it all up and it never really existed in the first place..? But no, of course it [i]existed[/i], I tell myself. I can still hum all the music, after all. And what should I find today, just by chance, but that the game was remastered 26 years after its original release. Forever immortalised in the memory banks of Steam, it can now never be forgotten. Thank you for freeing me from this responsibility.

This is an excellent reinterpretation of a classic old game that I played the HECK out of when I was younger. This game got me hooked on ARPGs. Thank you for preserving this game forever!

First of all, I can't believe this game has been on Steam for a year and no one told me! Second, I am so pumped! I loved playing this game as a kid.
