About Knights of the Sky
Simulation of Aerial Combat and Gallantry in World War 1.
Flying north along the road from Lille to bust a German recon balloon. I wave to the foot boys in their muddy trenches. Poor devils. Oh, how they envy me!
Off to the left! Can it be? The scoundrel in the red Fokker! My dear chum Bates signaled that his gun was jammed, but that greedy Hun downed him nonetheless. The Fokker is flying east. Homeward, low on petrol, no doubt. The balloon can wait. This won't take long.
You are a hunter stalking Germany's most celebrated pilots, including the infamous Baron Manfred von Richtofen. Using news and intelligence reports as well as your own intuition, you track down the 16 men whose successors diminish your own. In the gallant tradition of the ancient knights, you challenge each to determine who is truly World War 1's Ace of Aces.

Knights of the Sky, developed by MicroProse Software, Inc. and later reintroduced by Nightdive Studios and Atari, is a World War I flight simulator that captures a very specific era of game design—one where immersion, difficulty, and player-driven storytelling were prioritized over accessibility and spectacle. It’s not just a game about flying planes; it’s about surviving in them, navigating uncertainty, and gradually building a reputation in a hostile and unpredictable war environment. Even decades after its original release, it remains a compelling example of how simulation games once approached realism and player agency. The setting places you in the fragile cockpit of early 20th-century aircraft, where every mission feels like a calculated risk. Unlike modern flight games that emphasize speed, firepower, and visual clarity, Knights of the Sky takes a slower, more deliberate approach. Aircraft feel heavy and imprecise, and combat unfolds at a pace that requires patience rather than reflexes. This design creates a constant sense of vulnerability—damage is meaningful, mistakes are costly, and survival is never guaranteed. The absence of modern conveniences such as detailed HUDs o…1 found this helpful
I played this back so many years ago I'd need more fingers to add the years up. Felt like it was a complicated mess back then and feel the same way today.
fun.
Another super old game from Microprose that I got from a bundle. Its about WW1 with some nice planes that you can use. Unfortunately every cockpit looks the same, the game feels very low FPS, you can use your mouse to fly the plane but its really janky... -The classic stuff you expect from an old game. Janky controls, no settings screen, old graphics... One thing I really hate is there's like a copy protection system in the game each time you open the game they shove a menu in your face and they show an insignia and they ask you "which squadron used this insignia?" if you guess correctly its like "oh you actually bought the game and didn't pirate it! Here play your game" and you get to play the game. If you guess incorrectly "oh... You pirated it? Well you only get to play a demo then." thankfully there is a manual included and in like page 68 or something you can find out about these squadrons and their insignias. Its super annoying to do this each time you start the game. You want a WW1 Flight sim game? Play Rise of Flight.

If you would like to play this game at its best then use a Commodore Amiga 1200 with a ram & processor upgrade, this pc version does not do the game justice at all. I was expecting the pc version to be better but oh how wrong was I. I have spent hundreds of hours playing this game on the Amiga and this pc version just does not do the Amiga version of the game any justice.
