La Bestia: The Migrant's Long Journey is a virtual reality game that provides an immersive experience of the challenges faced by migrants on their journey from South America to the United States of America. The game is set on a train called La Bestia, where you take on the role of a migrant. You will encounter many other migrants on the train, each with their own unique story to share. These stories are based on real events and offer insights into the difficulties and experiences of migrants. You need to move around the environment and get closer to each migrant to hear their story.
The game consists of two scenes. The first scene places you in a train car with other immigrants. It is a contemplative experience where you can interact with the migrants, who are represented as statues, by simply moving around. The second scene takes place inside a train car, and the mechanics are the same as in the first scene. The game automatically switches between the two scenes.
It is a moving experience that offers a glimpse into the harsh reality of the migrant journey.
In this version, all the migrant dialogues are in Spanish.

La Bestia: The Migrant's Long Journey is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this "art experience". Instead of being a game, La Bestia: The Migrant's Long Journey is a software application that presents a poorly made art exhibition. This is an interactive "art" exhibition where you sit on a train and South Americans tell you stories in Spanish. That's it. No gameplay, this is not a game. It's true that games can be art... art is where the pinnacles of craftsmanship and quality meet vision and narrative to create an experience far greater than the sum of the parts. This isn't a game at all, and the craftsmanship and narrative are terrible. This isn't making art better, it's just making gaming worse. Also doesn't help that the "art" assets in this "game" look like they're mostly flipped stock assets. Never okay. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. [h1]Experienced on the Meta Quest 3[/h1] So I have to be honest, I didn't really enjoy this experience. If it wasn't free, I would have given it a negative recommendation. It's a 10 minute long, purely cinematic VR experience with gaze navigation at the start, motion controllers are not used. Even though it was only 10 minutes long, I was wanting to get off the train much earlier than that. Maybe that was the point of it. There is this audio tidbit migrant story that is in Spanish. However, it's such a small part of the experience. Most of it just being either on top of the train or inside in one of the railway carts. The migrants are portrayed as mannequins, which may have been an artistic choice or maybe it was the only free asset 3D model they could get. Experience is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 72 fps. I did not experience any serious issues or bugs. There is no locomotion or turning, this is all room-scale movement. There are no interactions. The little bit of audio is spatial audio that you'll want to move in closer to be able to hear it.
