About Laugh Track

Welcome To Your New Job

You're now the lead writer for Juno's World, a perfectly normal sitcom in which nothing strange or horrible happens, ever! We're so happy you've chosen permanent employment. Management has infinite faith in your ability to steer our production team towards our mysterious and important endgame. You'll be guiding four teenagers -- Juno, Cat, Daniel, and Remy -- through the trials and travails of high school life.Using our patented "Ratings(tm)" system, you'll make decisions that keep them entertainingly unhappy! But not too unhappy, or they'll break. But also not too relaxed, or they'll fight back. We can't have that, no! How will we ever reach syndication if the entire project collapses?

Laugh Track is a narrative-focused visual novel that takes the comforting familiarity of a television sitcom and gradually transforms it into something far more unsettling. Developed and published by Fiction Factory Games, it casts the player as the lead writer of Juno's World, a seemingly cheerful show revolving around four teenagers: Juno, Cat, Daniel, and Remy. Instead of merely watching their lives unfold, the player is responsible for shaping their experiences in ways that keep the fictional audience entertained. This immediately establishes the game's central conflict, because creating good television does not necessarily mean creating good lives for the people trapped inside it. One of the strongest ideas is the Ratings mechanic, which turns audience satisfaction into a persistent consideration behind narrative decisions. The characters cannot simply be given peaceful, uncomplicated lives because happiness does not necessarily produce compelling television. Conflict, embarrassment, emotional difficulties, and relationship problems can make the show more entertaining, yet pushing the cast too aggressively carries consequences of its own. The resulting system places the playe…

The game does a good job of feeling like a sitcom (as much as a VN can aspire to emulate). There are heavy topics explored in the game, but it holds onto a positive / hopeful message overall. One thing to note, some minor plot / character context rely on knowledge of the game Penny Larceny (and maybe other Fiction Factory Games), so it may help to play that game before this one.

I'm a sucker for stories set in weird/scifi/creepy parodies of sitcoms like Truman Show, Wandavision, Kevin can F*** Himself, or PleasantVille, but this one goes beyond that. This game puts you directly into the seat of decisionmaker. You get to influence how this story plays out. Funny enough, I got my ideal ending on my first playthrough, but there are other endings available. This game may be set in a sitcom, but the message of the game resonates within our current political climate (and the climate of the past as well). Some of the references to our current world are a little bit on the nose (NICE agents rounding up immigrants), but it allows us to laugh at the absurdity of the world we currently live in. Even after the "good ending", I was left questioning if I am falling into the trap of complacency about the fascist control and oppression that goes on around me. Am I doing enough or am I treating games like this as a way to avoid real action to improve my world. I highly recommend this game. References to other Fiction Factory game of Arcade Spirits was also a pleasant surprise. It made me want to play their other games to see what other games reference one another.
