I enjoyed several of the other Lego games (Star Wars, Batman) and I am a huge LoTR fan (I read the Hobbit at 8, LoTR at 10), so I though I'd try this; I was very disappointed. First, it's not the complete story, the game ends when Smaug leaves Erebor, leaving you hanging. As it is based on the movies, there are many parts that have nothing to do with the original book, and some very good parts that were left out. There is an over-reliance on parkour puzzles, which, with no manual camera controls, are often impossible to complete unless you can manipulate the camera to just the right angle. There are far too many fetch quests, or puzzles that you have to have one certain character (and even costume in some cases). In all, after completing the story (such as it is) and finding that it was less than 40% completion, my frustration began. The searches for mithril bricks, characters, loot, etc., began to feel that were only there to be the fodder for other quests for other random items or characters. On a technical note: Some advancements that you are supposed to automatically receive for just completing a section, failed to fire. Graphics: 9/10 Gameplay: 2/10
96/100 While I may be a little biased because lotr is my favourite franchise, I think this is genuinely one of the best Lego games.
WARNING: Incomplete and a technical mess. This game does NOT include the entire trilogy. It only covers the first two movies, leaving the story completely unfinished. On top of that, the game heavily restricts you in the open world until you finish the story. I just completed the main campaign and wanted to enjoy the open world and go for 100% completion. However, the severe technical issues quickly made me so frustrated that I just gave up and stopped playing entirely. Puzzles and side quests become a nightmare when you constantly have to tweak the framerate and graphics settings, or restart the game just to progress. This completely kills the flow and takes away all the fun.
Nice little game to play. Well, quite not so little to get 100%. The over the top humour is a bit out of place in the world of Tolkien. But that makes it a Lego game. But it was a nice playthrough. Just annoying there is no end. So Smaug keeps on living.
