What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Players praise the game's engaging combat system, striking graphics and sound, and especially the innovative Nemesis system that creates dynamic enemy encounters and memorable interactions. However, some criticize the story and characters as weak, note that the open world contains gimmicky side content, and feel the Nemesis system's full potential only reveals itself after player deaths, making it feel underutilized in regular gameplay. Most still recommend it, particularly at a good price point, though some suggest the sequel improves upon the formula.

brilliant game. Good graphics, great sound and very good gameplay were some enemies remember their encounters with you and act on it in the future. Right now in 2026 this is still very much a very essential game. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Probably can skip this one and jump straight to the sequel. Ignoring collectables and gimmicky side quests, there's about 5 hours of solid gameplay here. Still a thumbs up.
this game is still incredible after all this time i first played it on ps4 when it first came out and now replaying on pc years later it has aged quite well only issue i had was my dualshock 5 controller would not get recognised at first i had to enable steam input outside of the game for it to work as when i did it via the steam overlay it would not work at all. the gameplay is fun as ever fighting waves of orcs and uruk hai and fighting captains which at times can get chaotic thanks to the nemesis system, the open world stuff was also fun to play although some missions can be really annoying with restrictions fighting enemies in the open world is where the game shines making enemies and allies of captains and the chaos the nemesis system can throw at you. i find the sequel better but the this game is still worth playing beforehand since most of this games systems and mechanics are carried over to shadow of war and the story is quite fun for a what if set in the lotr universe.
I think that, considering this game's price, it's very easy to recommend to at least buy it and give it a go (especially if you get the bundle with Shadow Of War, which, whilst I haven't played that yet/will get to it next, I presume it's a much better version of this game). The story and characters are all really bad, and all of the villains, Sauron included, suck (except for Sauron's design), but perhaps it isn't helped that I don't like LOTR one bit. Nevertheless, the gameplay is pretty good! It's basically the Arkham free-flow combat with some tweaks and new moves, and it's quite enjoyable. However, the nemesis system (at least in this game/I haven't played War) sucks and is overrated. You don't really get to build stories or do anything with it unless you somehow die, but you're really overpowered in this game so that's going to be rare (and even then, it changes nothing and all of the enemies just have forced weaknesses you have to take advantage of in some cases else you can't even damage them, which is just unfun and forced). Additionally, it is the most tedious thing as to how every single time you meet a new captain, war chief, etc., that dumb cutscene introducing them …
Amazing game, still holds up and the Nemesis system is top notch
