Lucah: Born of a Dream

This game slaps. 'Justifiably-Angry-Queer Undertale' via Hyper Light Drifter's gameplay on caffeine and an aesthetic I would glowingly describe as "melted crayons in school-desk knife scribbles". Play it once for the game, twice for the angst (complimentary), then buy and play the sequel.

Not many stories touch me to my very core, leaving a hole behind that remains years after they are over. This is one of those stories. In a way, this game is one of survival, fending off creatures of nightmare while roaming the land alone and having brief encounters with people you don't really connect with. There seems to be a destination in mind, but your time in this world is limited; the bar in the corner fills at a slow rate yet constant rate, but fills up even more with your death. (For those that really don't like it, the game is pretty forgiving with how slow it is. I managed to complete my 1st run with the bar being maybe around 50%. And if you still really don't like it, then minor spoiler: [spoiler] the game doesn't end the 1st time you reach 100% [/spoiler] ) Yes, the story is confusing and mysterious, with the writing being obscure and the visuals being not very detailed. Lucah : Born of a Dream is a fascinating game that melds a clearly personal and traumatic story with a striking wireframe art style to create something that is undeniably unique but its approximative and often confusing gameplay hold it back from being something I can whole-heartedly recommend. The plot is incredibly mysterious and obtuse, even for a soulslike. You awake on a beach and soon discover you are surrounded by flickering red nightmares, your own inner demons somehow brought to life. From there you’ll travel through a church, a train yard, a radio tower and more besides in an attempt to discover what’s happening and how to stop it. Story is dolled out at regular intervals by NPCs and a handful of written notes, but I’ll admit I was not entirely sure what was going on until I hit New Game Plus … which tranforms the game into a visual novel with walls of text to read that fill in some of the blanks. To be honest, most soulslikes fans probably aren’t looking for a rich and detailed story in their games; it’s all about the exploration and combat mechanics. i still don't get what the dream is, but it's still really cool

this is the first game that feels like i'm the specific target audience. Incredibly helpful and therapeutic for someone with night-terrors, psychosis, schizophrenia. One of my favorite games of all time. The music score is incredible and the art is straight out of my sketchbook
