Play this if you want bad art, an unfinished story and the most annoying best friend ever. Also bad writing I guess, I not once saw a point in reading all this.

It's an e-book dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual novel/e-book/fan-fiction, this has no notable gameplay. It's just clicking through badly written dialogue that would never be accepted in print by an actual professional publisher. How did something this badly written end up on Steam? When someone can't get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam Direct under the guise of a game. This garbage e-book is incredibly cringey AI slop, where the "author" prompted a chatbot to write a cringey fan-fiction where the author relates his fantasy of having sex in the army. I kid you not. Jesus wept. This was made using the Ren'Py kit, which lets people who aren't developers create godawfully bad e-books that they then pretend are actually PC games. While the premise of a choice-driven conscription drama initially looks like a simple indie read, spending exactly 15 minutes inside the client is more than enough to see that the execution delivers a highly focused and straight-to-the-point interactive book.The central feature that streamlines the experience is the complete removal of unnecessary mechanical bloat, letting you focus entirely on the text. The core loops provide a steady and casual routine of clicking through a unique, unedited experimental dialogue framework that feels like a distinct, raw prototype rather than a standard visual novel. It is essentially an accessible, short military fiction piece packed into a lightweight game module. On the positive side, it successfully respects your active Steam showcase by completely omitting broken tracking achievements, while fully respecting your actual reading time for a quick session. Do not skip this deployment.

Mandatory Fun is a surprisingly interesting visual novel because it takes something as ordinary as military service and uses it as the setting for a story about adapting to a completely new life. I play as a young man conscripted into the Finnish military, and I liked the mixture of comedy, drama and relationship focused storytelling. The title also works as a pretty good description of the situation, since the whole experience revolves around being pushed into something I did not choose. The gameplay is mostly about dialogue and choices rather than traditional action. I talk to characters, make decisions and see how those choices affect relationships and the direction of the story. I enjoyed this because the game gives me enough freedom to shape the protagonist's experience instead of making me simply watch a fixed sequence of events. The military setting gives the conversations an interesting backdrop. Learning the rules, getting used to the environment and dealing with the other people around me creates plenty of opportunities for humor and awkward situations. boring game. art style is all over the place thanks to AI. the story is not interesting. the characters suck. i feel like the devs of this game have never served a day in their life. this game would've been way better with original art and more driven story.
