About Maptroid: Worlds

A metroidvania experienced entirely in the map!

Sequel to the acclaimed short browser game Maptroid. Maptroid: Worlds has you return exploring metroidvania style, and in multiple planets this time, filling out the map and collecting items, and powerups as you go. Can you make it home for dinner a second time?

Features:

 • You can visit a number of planets, explore and fully map them out.
 • Collect powerups to enable you to explore new areas, and zip through the map faster and faster.
 • Quirky, but not outrageous story and lore writing connecting the worlds for you to discover.
 • Improved ship graphic!
 • 40 small puzzle levels for you to solve in puzzletroid mode.
 • 40 small relaxing maps for you to explore freely in zentroid mode.
 • Speedrun mode so you can get faster times unfettered by dialog!
 • And a secret hard mode for a challenging replay if you want to experience something different.

Doesn't live up to the promise of the original. The short-form metroidvania is compelling due to its tight environmental narrative. The concept is mirrored here, but majorly broken down by an integral gameplay system: teleportation. This negatively effects the game in two ways. 1. The original game gave you a shovel and a hammer to break through walls and *EXPLORE*. This game
teleports you back and forth from world to world, increasing your sight radius very quickly and revealing the map, completely removing the exploration element. All that remains is to ping-pong around from teleporter to teleporter
until you've finished the game. Really not compelling. 2. This game is short. REAL short. One of the methods used to increase length in this game (compared to the free Kongregate version) was introducing multiple worlds.
This could work fine and great if those worlds were actually explorable but referencing the first point, you're teleported back and forth so quickly that the multiple worlds become meaningless.
I wish the exploration were slower paced, like the first game with more secrets to actually *FIND*. I wish there were more …

Reminds me of the day a childhood friend bought a used Game Boy and it came with a cartridge that he played for five minutes, deemed it boring and then gave it away to me. The game was Metroid II: Return of Samus. I didn't know about the series, or the genre it created, I went in blind and was enthralled. Maptroid: Worlds compresses the essence of Metroid into a cube, something that could work on a TI-83 graphics calculator, with your schoolmates wondering why you're playing that boring game again, there's nothing happening?? But you would know better. No jumping and shooting, yeah, but there still is an adventure, a small galaxy to discover. Bonus point for me: I adore "map painting" in any game, be it an open world racer where you colour in the roads or a dungeon crawler.

This is a cute little game. For the price, this was a lot of fun. I don't think it has much in terms of replayability, but for $3, I am ok with that. Thank you, dev for this game.

It's a fun game, takes ~3 hours for me to get all the achievements, I'd say it's good if you like metroidvania games.
