The tiles you’ll be handling are standard, with three suits and nine tiles in each, ranging from 1 to 9, honor tiles with four wind tiles and three dragon tiles, and flower tiles. The two suits, circle and bamboo tiles, are easy to figure out because of the numbers they represent, while the “wan” tiles won’t be as easy. Fortunately, you can hover the mouse cursor over them to see exactly which number they represent, or turn on an option in the settings that always shows numbers on tiles. However, traditional mahjong rules are not required because this game is about creating pairs, triplets, and sequences. Each game starts by filling a board with random tiles, and your job is to move them around to create pairs, triplets, or sequences, which can contain a maximum of three tiles. You must do as much as you can with what you have been given, and then discard a single tile you don’t need. Matrix Mahjong is a clever reinterpretation of Mahjong that turns the familiar process of assembling melds into a spatial strategy game with roguelite influences. Developed and published by Chao8games, it does not attempt to reproduce a conventional Mahjong match. Instead, it takes recognizable concepts such as pairs, chows, pungs, winning hands, and Faans and rebuilds them around a 3x7 playing grid. The result feels approachable enough for people with little Mahjong experience while offering established players an unusual ruleset that requires them to reconsider habits developed through traditional play. The 3x7 grid is the foundation of the experience. Melds can be constructed horizontally as well as vertically, allowing tiles positioned at intersections to contribute to two patterns simultaneously. Very fun mahjong game that made me wanna ask my 檯脚 to play with me. 10/10 experience, love the mechanics this game has brought to the table, it may be confusing at first, but i got the gist of it after a few games.
