Million Monster Militia

I've said this before in reviews and it has happened again. This game fails on the cardinal sin of the genre - failing to balance the scale of Skill and Luck. The honeymoon phase was great - felt like a decent chunk of units, a decent variety of builds, and a fun design. About halfway through you realize it was smoke and mirrors. Most of those builds fail to be able to keep up with ever scaling enemy health and unit limiting challenges. There's maybe 2 you can stick with that will ever do enough damage. Have a challenge where you can't use those units or it wipes those units off the map periodically? Oh well. Don't get those units at the end of enough rounds because its just a random roll who you can get? Oh well try again. The skill ceiling is a foot off the ground, the luck ceiling is in space.

I like the premise of the game pretty well-- It is effectively Luck be a Landlord, but re-framed to be about a monster militia instead of a slot machine. The thing that eventually put me off, though, is that I just think the difficulty is tuned up too high. The big appeal of a game like this (and in fact one of its advertising points) is finding which units synergize with others to help you rack up massive point combos. But in this one, it feels like the developer tried to prevent as many overpowered strategies from emerging as possible. I could see many units and unit combinations that have the POTENTIAL to become overpowered, but then those units have a hard cap on how many times they can be used before they just disappear. On top of that, there are very limited options for luck manipulation when it comes time to add a new unit to your "deck." You'll be shown a choice of 6, with exactly 1 reroll, and sometimes the reroll shows you some of the same units as your first roll. Sometimes your choices are limited to the "common" rarity pool with none of the higher rarities showing up, and sometimes that's actually beneficial to your build, but other than that you don't have much infl…

Fun little auto-battler-ish. Quite similar to "Luck be a Landlord", but with very different aesthetics. Draft a unit into your pool each round. Units combine in fun and surprising ways. As you learn more about combinations, you'll find interesting strategies.

I like roguelike deckbuilders. Deckbuilders in general really. So after playing the game for a bit I can say that it's really disappointing. RNG is king here, and unlike games such as Luck be a Landlord, you get pitiful amounts of control over most mechanics. Game mechanics like rerolling/banishing options are either woefully underdeveloped or non-existent. If the game is on sale and you can get it for 1-2 dollars, and you can't find any other deckbuilders that you haven't played already, and you only plan on playing for 1-2 hours at most, then I'd say it's worth buying. But if you play any longer than that you'll realize the game is about as deep as a 1.3oz can of pringles, and it's not even the flavor you like.

I got this game not because I thought it was good, but because I appreciated its sense of humour, and the art style is great. Overall it kinda sucks, it's a bit buggy in the very annoying way, the UI is hostile in a few aspects, and there are missions (and their connected achievements and unlockables) that seem to simply not be accessible at all. Oh also there's text from the monsters talking about some big bad called "Ezra" I think it was. You never see him.
