Mini Tank Mayhem

This game has so little respect for your time that it's absurd. I have never played a roguelite both as grindy and as punishing. Slay the Spire - the exemplar of the genre - you can get to Act 3 and even beat everything but Act 4 on a fresh file if you're clever and good at card games. You cannot appear to do that here. You simply don't have the juice, and I am four hours in and basically every run still feels the same because the 'interesting stuff' is gated behind unlocks that take hours to finish. I have leveled exactly one commander, once, out of a cast of like 18 ish. There is also an annoying, smug helper character, like a Zelda fairy but taking the unhelpfulness all the way to active condescension, and no, you can't unsummon it. This game is poorly optimized - loading the same map multiple times with slight variation in what is clearly "yeah we're regenerating the level and re-baking the assets" instead of just caching things. You can't access the pause menu in the node select screen. It is punishingly difficult but with zero feedback for what you are doing wrong - the cardinal sin of Tower Defense games. I would return it if I didn't spend four hours digging for the fun. …

So Grindy and SLOW to meta progress.... which would be ok if the base game play loop itself were less meh.... sadly, this is the most meh game I've played in years. It's not an MMO, I should not be looking at investing YEARS of daily play to unlock a simple meh tower defense game progression.....

Not only is it easy to get into, but both the player and enemies have bonus tiles which can impact the tower placement. While both the TD and deckbuilding parts are light, its foundations are solid and the actual gameplay is fun. The different factions do feel distinct enough in how they play and each has several heroes with unique powers. Tower placement is meaningful, as is the deckbuilding where you need to know which towers and upgrades are your winning condition. With that said, there were a couple of issues. The biggest issue is the low card variety. This is surprisingly not due to a small card pool (it's decent enough). The actual reason lies behind the very slow unlock rate of new cards. This leads to repetitive card and relic offers severely limiting choices in early runs. In addition to that, there are simply too many battles, which together with the previous issue makes fights feel repetitive as deckbuilding is often finished by the mid-point of the game. This was a well done game. It took me a long time to beat a run. Recommended.
