About Morok

Morok is a visual novel with a northern character. Imagine this: you woke up in a swamp. Gnats are swarming around you. A creepy old woman invites you to her hut. The plot of the game takes us to a small Russian village. Everyone knows you, but you don't recognize anyone. The player will set out on the path to figure out exactly what happened in this place and who they really are.

✦ AI summary

Players praise Morok's striking visual style, atmospheric storytelling rooted in folklore and mystery, and multiple branching endings tied to player choices, with several calling it an underrated gem worth playing for free. However, the game suffers from notable technical issues including sprite glitches, missing standard visual novel features like save functionality and text history, and some players criticize the writing quality and dialogue as poorly executed for a narrative-focused experience.

Morok is a narrative-driven visual novel developed and published by Varoi games that embraces psychological mystery and folklore-inspired storytelling rather than traditional gameplay mechanics. Set within a remote rural environment steeped in uncertainty, the game immediately establishes an unsettling tone by placing the player in the role of a protagonist who awakens in a swamp with no clear understanding of how they arrived there. A meeting with a strange old woman soon leads into a larger mystery involving an isolated village whose residents seem familiar with the protagonist despite their complete lack of memory. This intriguing setup forms the backbone of an experience that is built around atmosphere, suspense, and gradual revelation. The game's strongest quality is undoubtedly its ability to create a persistent feeling of unease. Morok does not depend on jump scares or graphic horror to hold the player's attention. Instead, it cultivates tension through unanswered questions and the constant sense that something is deeply wrong beneath the surface of ordinary village life. The central mystery surrounding the protagonist's identity becomes increasingly compelling as more deta…

It's free and the art is nice! There's only two things that really annoyed me with this game and those would be the one (1) glitch it has nearing the end of a certain storyline (one of the character sprites doesn't disappear when it should and covers up the other one - really annoying), as well as the general mechanics while playing what is a visual novel. Why do I not get a backlog/history of sorts for if I clicked too fast? The menu only pauses the game and allows you to go to the title screen but the game does not... need to be paused. I have NO idea how to save in this one lmao, and yet there's a load button on the title screen UI. Yeah, idk lol. I think these should be very basic features for a visual novel or any kind of game like this (not that it matters much though; the story is short enough in order to not need to save and it loads slow so clicking too fast would need to be deliberate). Although I do admit I didn't really try to experiment with other keys on my keyboard or whatever for this one because it was this short. Simply made do with my mouse. The story is okay too I guess; very linear and it has only like 3 endings I think? Haven't felt the need to get any others …

Morok is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This badly written and frankly boring e-book is accompanied by badly drawn and frankly boring pencil art. At least there is symmetry. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages. You'd think it was garbage. Now imagine that experience, but with much worse writing (because if these guys could write professionally, they'…
