About Mystery Castle

A retro-inspired masterpiece, Mystery Castle is the one puzzle game that will rule them all!

This game is for everyone who loves adventure, treasure hunting, laughing out loud, transforming into creatures, drinking potions, possessing monsters, explosions, inept wizards, witless golems, huge floating eyeballs, magic portals, magic lanterns, grumpy dwarfs, cheerful eskimos, irate hotel owners, giant monsters, throwing bombs at giant monsters… and then laughing some more!

As Monty the Wizard you must solve 180 unique stages and save the five Castles of Mystery from the evil that lurks within. Are you smart enough to outwit a giant snowman? How about a half-witted ogre? Along the way, you'll meet a host of colorful characters, from Stumpi the treasure-hungry dwarf in the Fortress Underground to the bossy Mr Chow in the Mystical Pagoda. They will all have plenty of advice - some of it might even be helpful!

You will discover hidden paths with a magical lantern and create your own with a well-placed bomb or two. In one moment you'll be dodging between boiling lava and Fire Golems, and in the next sliding perilously over sheets of ice – just be sure not to fall to your doom into the bottomless abyss. You will need to transform into a troll to move heavy objects, a bat to fly across deep chasms, and a frog to squeeze through tiny holes. But how will you avoid the deadly gaze of the Eye-Spy that can turn you to stone in a blink? Drink a handy potion to shrink to a fraction of your size or perhaps sneak past by possessing a nearby ghost.

Your options are only limited by your genius.

With all the recent big blockbusters both coming out soon and having been released in the past few years, sometimes it's nice to just sit back and relax with a simple puzzle game. Despite lacking any particular unique qualities, Mystery Castle is just plain pleasant to play, and if you're into that then perhaps this is the game for you.
The Breakdown
Mystery Castle is pretty bland and vague story-wise, but coming from a game that looks so cheery and cute I'd expect nothing more. You play as Monty, a fat wizard guy (or at least, a lot of the jokes other characters make seem to generally be about his weight for some reason) who's placed in a mysterious cave area. There's a dwarf you can talk to and a puzzle to solve. The dwarf tells you that some evil guy appeared and did some stuff and now there's bad monsters and a bunch of lava. Cool, that's super vague and unimaginative. But hey, at least the dwarf guy is fairly funny! And story-wise I guess that's all I can give this game credit for. Most of the characters you meet are somewhat humorous (though your mileage may vary) so it helps both explain the simple narrative and adds some jokes to the mix. Gameplay-wise, every lev…

Mystery Castle is a casual puzzle game, many intresting and unique ways of solving the various puzzles exist. Just remember... don't push the wooden boxes into the Lava.. because you know.. lava burns stuff.. With the obvious stuff out of the way lets get right into the review..
The Story
You play as a Wizard, doing what Wizards typically do.. exploring strange towers, on this Adventure a Dwarf introduces himself.. (BTW Dwarfs Rule) He explains that the Wizard needs to help him collect the Dwarven booty (no not that kind of booty, but Diamonds). After explaining how they will split the loot (with the Wizard doing all the work) you are left to your own devices. What follows is a fun game which at times will test your mind, at other times will test your patients, and sometimes you'll be left wondering what the heck you're doing.. The best thing to remember is this game will be a fun ride for Puzzle fans of all ages..
The Gameplay
The game features numerous levels, comprised of various different levels. You're tasked with collecting 5 items which will open a door to progress in the tower. Various elements stand in your way.. Lava, endless gaps, …

An excellent puzzle game in the vein of Sokoban and Adventures of Lolo. The graphics are charming and the music doesn't get repetitive even after listening to it for a long while. The sound effects the main character makes upon dying do feel a bit out of place, though. Most of the time you have everything you need in order to solve the puzzle staring right at you, and it's up to you to figure it out, which is exactly the kind of puzzle game I like. There are a few cases where you need to check what switches do, but that's still acceptable. Enemies are of the passive kind, they'll never actively chase you. Couple of times you do need some timing skills to get past them, but overall it's very much of a slow-placed, thinking man's game. It's the kind of game where you can stare at the screen for 30 minutes trying to solve it in your head before executing your plan. And then feel an equal amount of pride for doing it and shame for taking 30 minutes to figuring out just where the boxes should be pushed to. The puzzles can get quite inventive at times, cleverly misdirecting the player and placing red herrings to sow further confusion. It took me 15 hours to play through the game, solvi…

A fun little game with challenging, but fair puzzles. Worth a look.
