Wasn't the worst but it's quite outdated now. I personally couldn't recommend it to anyone.

This game is far too old to be enjoyable anymore. Even when launching it, it only launched in the bottom left corner of my screen. The gameplay is also severely lacking given how much games have progressed now, and it feels more like a scuffed arcade game. Honestly, I may be being a little harsh on the game given its age, but I feel like even among some of the old games, this game falls short.

I watched the store page video and this game looked terrible. The graphics were garish and hideous, the animation was stilted and awkward, and the gameplay looked janky and uncomfortable. The reviews pointed out serious flaws like in-game copy protection and game-breaking bugs. It was so off-putting it seemed as though Mystical was daring anyone to play it. But, if I'm in the right mood I can find things to like in even bad games, and I can't resist a retro throwback when it's on sale for pocket change, so I bought this and gave it a whirl. Before even playing, I decided to look up the manual so I would be prepared for the copy protection. You are told you can stockpile phials and scrolls by quickly pressing the Space Button when walking on them, or you can cast them instantly by standing on them for a few seconds. Mystical is the kind of retro game that instantly reveals its age, yet somehow remains fascinating because of it. Developed by Infogrames and brought back to modern platforms through Ziggurat, the game feels like a preserved piece of early PC gaming history rather than a title attempting to compete with contemporary releases. It throws players into a fantasy adventure built around magic, dangerous dimensions, and artifact recovery, all wrapped inside a side-scrolling action framework that reflects the design philosophy of the early 1990s. The story itself is uncomplicated, following a young apprentice magician tasked with recovering scattered magical objects after a disastrous mistake, but the simplicity of the setup works because the game focuses more on atmosphere and challenge than narrative depth. What stands out almost immediately is how unapologetically old-school the gameplay feels. Mystical does not guide the player gently into its mechanics or offer extensive explanations.
