Nadir: A Grimdark Deckbuilder

Nadir is an okay card game, with an interesting mechanic that forces you to trigger known responses from your opponent as a cost to play your cards. Each of your cards has two sides that can alternatively be played based upon the opponent's available moves. Apparently the company folded before fully completing the game, so the end product is fine, but not one of the better choices out there, particularly not for $20.

I hate writing negative reviews, especially for smaller games, but I think it's outrageous how much potential this game has, and how little the devs decided to do with it. The animations are buggy and don't play sometimes, the progression is confusing, and the game controls poorly and in different ways on controller and keyboard/mouse. I play these types of games...A LOT, and usually I can find something positive to say about any one that I've played, to the point of wondering if I'm too easy to please in that regard. Playing this game just made me realize that there's an incredible standard set, and this doesn't live up to it. I'm willing to overlook lots of stuff, even when it comes to games leaving early access but still being unfinished...the difference is that other devs will still keep a line of communication with players, to show them that they care about delivering an enjoyable experience. I've seen nothing of the sort here, and the most recent newspost was just about a sale the game was having, which feels like a slap in the face. If you're someone like me, who never really figured out card games as a kid, but are curious about getting into them? Then, I would definitely recommend. Once you've gotten a feel for the mechanics, it's peanuts, but the fights stay challenging. So, learn your cards and optimizing your deck. Good luck!

This game quickly became one of my favorites, and I still can't understand why this game is bringing out overly critical consumers. The music & art are fantastic. The art direction for the characters is reminiscent of the old German artwork of "Death as a Knight". The historical fiction themes I understand aren't for everyone, I however enjoy playing as Vlad the Impaler killing demons in Hell accompanied by the spirits of Guy Fawkes, Maximilien De Robespierre, Alexander the Great, and Attila the Hun because that's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ badass. The only criticism I whole-heartedly agree with is that it is technically unfinished. You can, however, beat the game. It is only the last two dungeons that say the buildings that are supposed to be unlocked are "To Be Announced"... As disappointing as that is, the entire game is otherwise finished and can be beaten. If it didn't have the text to say "To Be Announced", I wouldn't even have known that it wasn't finished... Not because I'm terribly unobservant, but because literally you can unlock and play everything and beat the game. I told myself I'd go back to playing this, but I'm not going to. I'm not huge into the whole deckbuilder concept, and what really drew me into this was the graphics. It looks great. I'd say it does the whole deckbuilding concept quite well too. Just not my jam.
