About Necromancer For A Week
The ultimate Monster taming game for players more interested in battling and trying interesting team line-ups than grinding levels!
Every run is an opportunity to try new Monsters and combos, with a run taking approximately an hour to complete. Completing a run also unlocks a random Monster as a Starter option.
Find the right teammate for your Monsters and you will decimate all those in your way!
This game is more about finding broken combos between Monsters than it is about a gruelling challenge. Higher difficulties restrict what Moves you can duplicate and auto-select a Monster for you each Battle - forcing you to figure out the perfect team combination to win.
Each run begins by choosing a Monster (every Monster can be unlocked as a potential Starter). From there you’ll encounter Tombstones with Monsters to reanimate and add to your roster, giving you more options to build your ideal 2-Monster team for battle.
Great care has been taken to ensure that every Monster has its own unique movepool and playstyle!
You start each turn with 3 Action Points (AP). Every Move has a cost, and you can use Moves from either Monster on your team – or both.
Chain together multiple Moves to unleash powerful combos and devastate enemies!
Each night’s main objective is to return to the Necromancer’s Citadel in the middle of the map. Along the way you’ll encounter more Monsters to reanimate, powerful Move Tomes and passives, and unique enemies to face.
Your Monsters won't heal until you return to the Citadel at the end of the night, so you'll need to constantly rotate your team and potentially make difficult sacrifices to make it back.
Some Monsters won’t appear in a run until you unlock them by completing certain challenges, such as:
- Use 9+ Moves in a single turn
- Apply 10+ Cursed to a single Enemy
- Use the same Offensive Move 4+ times in a turn
- Win a Battle without using any Strategic Moves
- Win a Battle in 2 turns or less
- Deal 99+ Damage in a single hit

The pixel art is charming and the presentation is okay, but the game loop feels shallow and unrewarding. Even after only a few runs (Standard, Extreme, and Nomnomicon... plus a lot of afking), starting a new one feels like a promise of boredom. There are few ways to customize your run and the lack of in-battle variance effectively means that after seeing each monster’s moveset once, you’re just going through the motions (and wading through incredibly slow animations, even on the fastest speed), as everything is predictable. I believe the dev(s) tried to remedy this with the very unfun/uninteresting implementation of having half your team picked at random, but that just doubles down on the game being about making 1 of your monsters a hard-carry. The game is also extremely easy, as it appears to be balanced around not getting anything half-decent, so if you get even a crumb of a build, the run is over. The only thing to play around is the enemy that bricks abuse loop builds (by making all your stuff that costs 0 cost 1), but even that hard-counter is fairly easy to overcome. Also it seems like half the game punishes attacks, so poison slaughters everything.4 found this helpful
*Selects Casual difficulty* *Gets combo going* End fight: I am specifically built to deny this exact combo! *Dies* *Repeat* One day I'll get you, Gadget! One day!!!1 found this helpful
Fun strategy roguelite. The mechanics are satisfying, and different from the run of the mill attacks and effects you usually see. It's a little slower paced than some similar games, but some of that may be me pondering choices too long. You definitely have to learn what works and what doesn't as a bad matchup (which is always perfectly visible when choosing your monsters) can definitely wreck you. You definitely want to diversify playstyles when picking monsters so you don't get countered, except the turtles are a soft gate on outright damage output. You would probably want to have at least one pair for raw damage anyway, but if you started with the tank and leaned into, say, DoT damage and blocking you might get hard countered by them. Most of the rest of the enemies are pretty well balanced assuming you have at least some options on your team.1 found this helpful

https://youtu.be/fO6LQfMRKC4 Drawn out battles with limited creature progression options quickly devolves every fight into the same basic routine.
Fun creature collector deckbuilding roguelike with interesting strategies in place. Would appreciate controller/steam deck support as right now the UI is too tight knit for precise touch screen controls for me.
