About OU

"Between something and someone."
Walk through the pages of this game-shaped experience—then you'll find out what it is.

The place is U-chronia, a hazy world that lives in hazy memories of the distant past.
OU, a young boy, wakes up in a dried up riverbed without any memories of his own.
He meets Zarry, an opossum with a flaming tail, who guides him on a journey to find out his story.

The Saudage Specter, who haunts the boy;
Gemini, who looks just like him;
The Weeping Woman "La Llorona", who leads him to tragedy.
All of them are there to change the Story and how it will end.

A pen-drawn world reminiscent of the illustrations in children's literature, accompanied by music for guitar and other instruments ripe with nostalgia for an old hometown.
This is the background where the Story, a story meant for someone, unfolds.

"OU" disguises itself as something else—an adventure game—to meet and interact with reality.
OU is also a challenge—a challenge to games as a whole.

The art caught my attention, the story caught my intrigue, and the music held me in place. It's an interesting story that touches on things I didn't really think about before playing, but I still occasionally think about now. It's hard to talk about it in-depth without spoiling the story, but mechanically it is about travelling between various scenes and trying to figure out who your character is and what's going on. It also includes the ability to throw different sticky notes at things to get a better understanding of what they are. Also, for those "in the know", it's great that the game description tells you to walk in the shoes of someone who is barefoot.

The narrative begins when a being referred to as OU awakens in a state of amnesia, having no knowledge of themselves or their surroundings. As they begin walking onward, they encounter a possum named, Zarry who explains that OU awoke in U-chronia, where the world is ephemeral, like a book which is read out of order. Together, the two set out to help OU find what they're looking for in U-chronia. As far as narratives go, OU is pretty abstract, even in the context of other games I've played. There is an underlying desire to convey the significance between art, artist, and viewer. However, OU intentionally obfuscates information behind incredibly vague dialogue, which leaves a reasonable amount of the interpretation up to the player. The result is a game which feels very dreamlike, with scenes being strung together with an underlying sense of significance, which is challenging to piece together. The art on OU deserves some praise with beautifully hand drawn areas which evoke a sense of a children's novel. As Zarry and OU travel, they can find little "stickies" which they can throw on things to bring out information about them. Throwing stickies is the only gameplay mechanism aside …

I cannot say a lot about OU to not spoil its contents. Nevertheless: it is more of an interactive experience / story, than a game. And one worth knowing at that. Let it be my whole review.
